Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySYLVIA JEAN GUERTIN-RILEY
Sylvia Jean Guertin-Riley passed away peacefully, with family at her side, on Friday, June 23, 2023, at the age of 86 years.
Sylvia was predeceased by her father (George), mother (Phoebe) and sister (Gail). She is survived by her brother Wayne (Essie), sister Anne (Al), son Michael (Shauna), daughter Jennith, stepdaughter Jill (Ron), and her lovely grandchildren, Taylor, Tanner, Addison, Jaidyn, and Ruby B and by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Sylvia was born in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan on September 16, 1936. Her family moved to Winnipeg in 1945 and she spent the remainder of her life contributing compassionately to this community.
Sylvia found her niche in the legal profession and was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1981. She spent the majority of her law career at the firm she established (Riley Orle Guertin Born) and she was a proud President of the Manitoba Bar Association. In 1995, Sylvia was appointed as a judge of the Family Division of the Court of Queen’s (now King’s) Bench. Here she excelled! Always known for her quick wit and devotion to her work, she was able to apply her considerable intellect, compassion, and empathy to families experiencing difficult separations and divorces. In particular, she had such a way with children (seeing many in her office or courtroom) that countless challenging custody cases settled rather than proceeding to trials. Sylvia participated in many court activities and committees, making a significant contribution to the introduction of the case management system. She was a mentor to many judges who followed her on the bench. She loved her job and found it hard to reach the mandatory retirement age in 2011.
Sylvia was colourful and confident and never hesitated to speak her word. Her kind and eccentric way had a significant impact on those she met, and she will always be remembered for dancing on her own, outstanding dinner parties, singing, and speaking up valiantly for those who could not.
She loved her children and grandchildren dearly and was always up for a cuddle or a conversation. She truly cherished her time with friends, colleagues, and family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 372 Oakdale on September 16, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sylvia loved to dance and we can come together and celebrate her life while she dances in the stars.
If friends so desire, donations can be made to the United Way.

I was honoured to have appeared before Madam Justice Guertin-Riley many times in my career. Her compassion for families going through difficult times was always evident. Her wisdom and common sense in helping to resolve matters was incredible. She was an amazing jurist and mentor. - Posted by: Karen Burwash (Lawyer) on: Jul 10, 2023
