Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDAVID GERARD STANLEY
After a long battle with cancer David passed away peacefully on the evening of July 5, 2023. He was 86 years old.
David was born on December 5, 1936, in Winnipeg, MB, the fourth born of John and Marguerite Stanley. He grew up in Winnipeg where he attended St. Paul’s High School and West Kildonan Collegiate. After one year of University David realized that was not the route for him, so he started work at his brother Michael’s garage. While attending youth group at St. Alphonsus Church he met the love of his life Sheila Foster, and the two were married June 29, 1963. In the same year David accepted a position with Air Canada at Winnipeg International Airport. David grew rapidly within the company moving from the ramp all the way to Airport Manager at the end of his career. His ability to deal with people and difficult situations shone through and the company took notice. During this time David and Sheila raised four children. In 1973, David accepted a transfer with Air Canada to Calgary, so he loaded up the family to start on a new chapter. While in Calgary David became involved in Air Canada’s “Dreams Take Flight” operation, which involved taking special needs children to Disneyland/World. Dave and Sheila also became heavily involved in St. Luke’s Parish. He became an usher as well worked at creating and delivering hampers for St. Luke’s Help the Needy.
David was a hard worker who adored his wife and children. In his free time, he liked to golf, curl, and go fishing/hunting with any one of his brothers. He was also heard cheering at his children’s sports activities alongside Sheila. David retired in 1992 but remained active in Pionairs, the retirement branch for Air Canada employees. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren as well as taking yearly trips to Palm Springs with Sheila.
David was predeceased by his wife Sheila, and will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Scott of Las Vegas, NV, Andrew (Leanne) of Calgary, Jennifer Wieninger (Michael) of Edmonton, and Trevor (Kelly) of Calgary. He was also very close to and will be greatly missed by Sheila’s brother Ken and his wife Susan of Calgary, along with her sister Brenda Yost of Winnipeg. He will also be remembered by his eight grandchildren, Drew and Finn Stanley (Scott), Sara, Helen and Annette Stanley (Andrew), Grace and Jack Wieninger (Jennifer) and Ava Stanley (Trevor). David was also predeceased by his parents, John and Marguerite, brothers, Gregory, Michael, Peter, and sister Marcia. He leaves behind his one surviving brother Paul. David will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but we know he is at peace and reunited with Sheila.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (1566 Northmount Dr. NW, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Live streaming will be available for friends and family who are unable to attend in person at
