DR. HARVEY RAY YOUNG
It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of a much-loved father, grandfather, teacher, colleague, and friend.
Harvey will always be cherished by his children, Cameron (Gordana), Scott (Margaret), and Susan (Brian), and his grandchildren, Christina, Zoe, Bobby, Emily, Julia, Shelby, and Lucas. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (“Ginger”) and siblings, Jean and Jack.
Harvey was born in Erickson, MB, and grew up on the family farm at Crawford Park. He moved to Stonewall, MB to attend high school and then Brandon College, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in geology in 1955. While studying, Dad played hockey for the College Caps, earning him a spot on Brandon University’s Athletic Wall of Fame in 1995. His passion for geology led to a master's degree at the University of Alberta in 1959 and a PhD from Queen's University in 1971.
Harvey met the love of his life while studying in Edmonton. He and Ginger were married for 60 years until her passing in 2017. Their life together was full of joy and adventure. They meant the world to each other and discovered it together. Harvey and Ginger traveled extensively through Australia, China, Egypt, Europe, South Africa, and South America. While Harvey was on sabbatical, the family joined for extended stays in England and New Zealand. Lifelong friends were made along the way. Summers were always spent enjoying the family cottage at Sylvan Lake, AB.
Brandon University was like a second home and family to Harvey. He put his heart into teaching geology for 38 years. Harvey was a dedicated professor and mentor to students, and received the first Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1988. He remained in contact with former students by hosting an annual barbecue at Sylvan Lake. Harvey was an avid supporter of BU athletics and attended many games. His supply of Bobcats T-shirts was endless!
Harvey befriended everyone on campus. You couldn’t go anywhere with him in Brandon without bumping into someone he knew to enjoy a friendly chat. After retirement Harvey volunteered his time in commitment to his community. He was the best of role models for his children and grandchildren. We all will miss him dearly.
The family would like to extend our thanks to the compassionate staff at both Rotary Villa in Brandon, and Bergen Gardens in Winnipeg. They made him feel right at home. A celebration of his life will take place on August 8, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the Healthy Living Centre, Brandon University. In lieu of flowers, please continue his legacy with a donation to the Dr. Harvey Young Memorial Scholarship in Geology at Brandon University at www.brandonu.ca/give/donate/ or call 204-727-7374 at the Office of Advancement.
