THE HONOURABLE ROBERT CARR

It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Carr announces his passing on July 10, 2023, at the age of 75.

Robert was predeceased by his parents David and Esther Carr and his brother Jim Carr. He is survived by his wife, Shawn Greenberg, his children Jill Carr (Alex Snukal) and David Carr (Sarah), grandchildren Isabelle, Rowena and Norah, brother Alex (Fern), and sister-in-law, Colleen Suche.

Robert grew up in River Heights, graduated from the University of Manitoba Law School and then obtained a Masters of Law from Harvard University. He practiced law at Taylor McCaffrey before being appointed a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench (now King's Bench) where he served for 31 years. Robert had many accomplishments throughout his legal career – establishing the University Legal Aid Clinic while still in law school, being instrumental in the establishment of a unified family court in Manitoba and in the implementation of a national communication network for judges. He spent many years teaching at Manitoba's law school and was actively involved in judicial education across Canada.

Robert was known for his intelligence, wit, good nature and compassion, traits which he maintained through a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was a man of many talents, but his greatest talent was connecting with people and making those he met feel special.

He was the most wonderful husband, father and grandfather and we will miss him terribly.

If friends desire, donations can be made to Parkinson Canada.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Shawn and family, I am so sorry for your incredible loss. - Posted by: Wendy Starr (Friend of Shawn) on: Aug 07, 2023

  • My sincere condolences to the family. Among the many positive attributes Justice Carr possessed perhaps I remember him most for his demeanor. As a young lawyer some 30 years ago Justice Carr was one of the few judges of that day that never failed to be kind, considerate and respectful to both counsel and litigants. And that wasn't very common at the time. - Posted by: Jon van der Krabben (Family Lawyer in Winnipeg) on: Jul 25, 2023

  • Deepest condolences to his family; Shawn, Howard, son, and his many friends. I have known Robert since we were in the same class for years at Brock Corydon School, and recently when he engaged me to drive his son's car to a University far away. I also used to run into him at Bernstein's Deli. We weren't close friends as our lives took different paths but I respected him greatly. He became very successful as I knew he would and never complained about the illness that burdened him. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Jim Weidman (Friend) on: Jul 20, 2023

  • I recall Justice Carr as even temperate, kind, perceptive and fair to everyone in his courtroom. My sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Lorraine Scollin (Family lawyer Winnipeg) on: Jul 16, 2023
