MARY CHUCKRY
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Chuckry on July 19, 2023. With family by her side, Mary passed away at the age of 63.
Mary was predeceased by her mom and dad, Steve and Olga; and brother-in-law Kelly Balak.
Cherishing many fond memories are her siblings, Bill (Terri), George (Dalilah), and Eleanor; nephews and niece, Kyle, Christopher, Michael and Laura and their families; and many other relatives and friends.
Mary was born September 19, 1959. She was raised and went to school in Springfield, MB. After completing high school she furthered her education by going to the University of Manitoba and obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
Mary was a pre-school teacher at General Vanier Nursery School for approximately 30 years. She was very passionate about her career - it was more than just a job to her. She truly loved working with the young children and her kind, caring, compassionate, and patient personality made her the wonderful teacher that she was!
It was this kind and caring nature that also made her such a compassionate caregiver. Mary helped care for her father and was the primary caregiver for her mother - often times never leaving her mom’s side upon mom’s various stays in the hospital.
Mary loved spending time with family and going out with her friends. Her other passions included travelling, photography, and spending time outdoors, especially having bonfires.
In 2019 Mary’s health unfortunately took a turn for the worse. She was diagnosed with cancer, experienced a fractured spine, broken leg and more, but through it all her wonderful spirit never changed. After a strong and courageous battle she succumbed to her cancer.
The Family would like to say a Very Special Thank You to the Moroz family for making it possible for Mary to come home as often as she did with the use of their wheelchair van. We will be Forever grateful for this!
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
Mary’s funeral service will take place Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 380 Sophia Street in Selkirk, MB. Interment will follow at the Ukrainian National Cemetery on Lorne Hill Road.

Mary and I met when she was the Director of General Vanier Nursery School and I was the Director of General Vanier Children's Centre. Mary was always so kind, helpful and she had one of the most generous and humble hearts I've ever known. She had a genuine interest in others well being and compliments were many. Over the years our friendship grew into a comfortable, relaxed and trusting relationship where you knew you could talk about anything without judgement and that secrets no matter how big or small would forever be safe with her. I use to get a chuckle when she would whisper shhhh lets close the door to be sure no one over heard our chatter. She made me laugh every time she would say "ok Mary get on with it, or ok fast forward, as she was telling a story. Despite her health issues and hardships over these past 4 years, Mary continued to look out for me. keeping in touch by phone, sending me sweet little messages and so on. She was a true friend...a keeper friend I called her. I will miss Mary deeply and will always remember her for the beautiful soul she was. The children with whom she taught, loved and helped shape with her gentle caring ways, the families she supported and the friends she made along the way ... we were all so blessed to have had the opportunity to be a part of her life. To be touched by her beauty and grace and to know that in this big big world I was lucky enough to have her choose me as her friend. Love you Miss Mary Mary quite contrary xo Till we meet again. xo IN FRIENDSHIP - kIM - Posted by: Kim Brown (Friend and colleague ) on: Jul 25, 2023

Ms. Chuckry was an incredible person who only ever emitted positive energy, kindness, and care. I was a student in her Nursery School class at General Vanier. I was a rather lonely person who struggled with socializing. Ms. Chuckry was always one to look out for me when I was having a hard time and often encouraged me to be confident in myself everyday. She will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Stacey W (Former student) on: Jul 25, 2023
