It is with heavy hearts for her passing and with gratitude for her long life that we mourn the loss of Annie Moroz, who passed away on Monday, July 17, 2023. A mom, grandma, baba, babcha, sister, aunt, and friend, she will be dearly missed.

Annie was born in Winnipeg on August 25, 1928, to Wasyl Burak and Kateryna Burak (Troc), and grew up on the family farm in Lorette. She worked in the fields, milked the cows, and found time to enjoy barn dances. She married Harry Moroz in 1951 and they shared life’s joys and hardships for 60 years before his passing.

Annie was a pragmatic, no-nonsense person, with a soft and generous heart. She welcomed all into her home, always offering food, of course. She was proud of being a hard worker; giving birth to four daughters within five years, her hands were full. And yet, being a voracious reader, Annie always found time to share a book. Family meals were homemade and nourishing. She sewed many of her young daughters’ clothes. Her flower and vegetable gardens flourished under her care, particularly her roses and African violets, which led her to work as a florist for many years. She was a great cook, especially traditional Ukrainian dishes. Parishioners enjoyed Annie’s garlicky studenetz, always her much anticipated contribution to church dinners. Annie was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church.

She participated in the bowling league and the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League, where she served as president. She worked and offered guidance in the busy parish kitchen. She particularly enjoyed her Wednesday seniors’ group. Into her 90s, Annie was an active volunteer for both her church and for other organizations. Her commitment to bingos and catering helped grow funds for the building of the church hall and seniors’ manor. Also important to her was canvassing for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Annie was a generous supporter of many causes. In addition to local charities, she sent financial aid to Ukraine throughout the years. She recently contributed directly to supply much-needed walkie-talkies to support first responders in Chervonograd, Ukraine. Annie was also instrumental in the UCWL donation to Nourishing Potential (The Winnipeg Foundation), one of the first donations to be received.

In retirement, Annie was able to fulfill her dream of travel. She and Harry were able to explore Canada and the U. S., and to venture further abroad. They twice visited family in Ukraine. They also travelled to Australia and New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and Japan. Her last travels were with daughter Patricia to tour the United Kingdom and to Mexico to enjoy the warmth with daughters Judy and Dianne.

Annie was predeceased by Harry in 2008, daughter Katherine Brough in 2013, brother Walter in 2003, and infant sister Mariyka in 1940. Keeping her in both thoughts and hearts are daughters Patricia Britton (Roy McPhail), sons Paul (Chelsea, daughters Grace Katherine and Meredith Anne), Eliot and Kierin, Dianne Moroz (Jamie Oliviero), sons Luke and Ben (Alex), Judy George (Lamont), sons Brian (Megan) and Brad. Her brother Peter and sister-in-law Jean will keep her in their prayers.

Annie was determined to remain in her own home and was blessed to do so for 67 years. Many thanks to her home care workers, especially Karen, with whom she had a special bond. She lived her last months at Holy Family Home, where she was treated with compassion and dignity. Annie’s family would like to extend appreciation and thanks to all staff members of Holy Family for their gentle ways, their kindness, and their professionalism.

In lieu of flowers, Annie’s wish was a donation to Nourishing Potential (The Winnipeg Foundation), Ukrainian Canadian Congress (www.uccmanitoba.ca) or Canada Ukraine Foundation, both humanitarian focused.
