Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMary Elizabeth Bruce
On a warm summer evening, as day faded into night, Mary Bruce slipped away to dance a jig amongst the stars. She was 102 years young.
As she rejoins her husband, Wesley Bruce, and her sisters, Ethel and Ruth, she leaves behind a legacy of family: her two children, Bryon (Mary Anne) Bruce and Sandra (Jim) Stoffman; her grandchildren, Rob, Cheryl, Danielle (Kirk), Joanna, Travis (Berlene) and Mikhail; and eight wonderful great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews.
Widowed in her late fifties, Mary was a strong, independent woman. After retiring as a correctional officer with the Portage Women’s Correctional Centre, she lived a quiet but full life. She enjoyed card parties, dances throughout the RM and curled well into her late eighties. As a long standing member of both the Rebekah Lodge and the United Church, she spent countless hours volunteering for the community she loved so much. Even after moving from her modest 7th Street NW home, at 87, and into the Oddfellows Towers, Mary collected rent for her fellow tenants until moving into the Prairie Lyons Manor 10 years later.
On behalf of Mary, the family offers their thanks to the staff at the Manor for their years of care and compassion. And a special, heartfelt thank-you to her niece, Beth Hay, who ensured that she got visited regularly when it was difficult for others to make the journey as often. It was a great comfort to the rest of the family residing from Winnipeg to BC.
A private interment will be held by her family at the Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choosing.
