MURDINA JESSIE MACIVER

With family at her side, Murdina passed away peacefully on August 11, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in the Grace General Hospital Intensive Care Unit at 84 years of age. Family members, Doug, David, Elaine, Isaac, KC and Essence consoled her in the days before her death.

She was predeceased by her loving parents, Murdo MacIver from Stornaway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland and Nellie MacIver (nee Todosiev) from Rossburn, Manitoba. She is survived by her maternal cousins, Olga Kolomyjec and Anne Perpar and their families; her paternal cousins, Douglas and Lorna MacDonald, Elaine Mordoch (nee MacDonald), Linda Chubey and their families.

Murdina grew up in the North End with the smell of baking bread in the early mornings, the vibrancy of Selkirk Avenue shops and the comfort of good neighbours. She loved to garden, growing and sharing garlic, onions, tomatoes, and vegetables. She and her neighbour Bill shared the potato patch. She enjoyed her rhubarb and raspberries as well as her peonies, lilacs and hollyhocks.

She was good spirited, fun and knowledgeable expressing a fountain of facts on diverse topics when you least expected it. She maintained a keen interest in current affairs, locally and globally. She would often leave phone updates on the Jets, Bombers and Blue Jays as well as pertinent medical facts for the family. She enjoyed telephone conversations with Olga and loved her flip cell phone that Doug gave her. She was known for her specific detailed grocery lists, her elegant cursive writing, remembering birthdays and ages of family children (sending money to match their ages) and her thoughtful inscriptions on cards. She was multi-faceted. She had a reverence for life and said grace over all her meals. One of her favourite songs was Fairy Tale in New York by the Pogues.

Murdina was an exemplary devoted daughter enveloping her Mother with loving care for many years. She honoured the family history of her parents, corresponding with older family members in Scotland and older Todosiev family members on the history of ancestors from Hungary - Austria. We thank her for preserving these details.

Thank you to the Grace General Hospital ICU and Spiritual Care staff for their tender care of Murdina.

Thank you to all neighbours, particularly Bill and family, who watched over Murdina.

A graveside ceremony will be held at Brookside Cemetery, LOT D5, plot 370. Thursday, August 24, 2023, at 1:30 p.m.

"Gude night, and joy be wi ye all, your harmless mirth has cheered my heart, may life's fell blasts oot oer ye blaw, in sorrow may ye never part. My spirit lives, but strength is gone, the mountain fires now blaze in vain. Remember, now, the deeds I've done, and in your deeds I'll live again." Alexander Boswell

Ar dheis Dia go raibh a anam. May her soul be in God's right hand.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • After my husband Stan completed his degree through the ROTP program at U of Alberta he got his first posting to RCAF Station Gimli, MB. A year later we were married and Gimli was our first home. For me it seemed far away from Alberta, but when I realized how close it was to Winnipeg I was quite happy. I could now meet my kind and generous Aunt Nellie. I grew up as the youngest of three girls on a small farm in the Peace River country area in Alberta. It was a poor farm and money was scarce. Aunt Nellie had just one daughter Murdina and as she grew out of her clothes we would get a parcel. We opened it with much excitement, along with the clothes were some treats. During the year we lived in Gimli we got to know Nellie and Murdina spending time together as time permitted and found them as the kind people they were. When my mom was terminally ill Aunt Nellie came by bus from Winnipeg to Peace River to see her. In 1967 that was no easy trip as there was no such thing as four lane divided highways. After leaving Gimli we were back sadly for Aunt Nellie's funeral. In more recent years we visited Murdina when we were in Winnipeg for our granddaughter's soccer tournament. Though distance separated us, as years went by Murdina and I kept in touch by telephone discussing politics and the affairs of the world among other things. Rest in peace my dear cousin, I will miss our conversations. Olga - Posted by: OlgaKolomyjec (Cousin) on: Aug 21, 2023
