FAY SWARTZ
Fay Swartz (Mittelman) passed away peacefully at home on August 16, 2023, at the age of 91. She was predeceased by her husband Clifford Swartz, parents Aaron and Zlata Mittelman, sisters Doisy Burke and Helen Roseman, and brother Max Mittelman. She is mourned by her son Kerry, daughter-in-law Analee Weinberger, and her grandchildren Oliver and Lucy, along with her nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Fay worked hard to improve herself and the people around her. She exemplified the traditional Jewish principles of treating each other with respect and assuming collective responsibility. She was a lifelong member of Hadassah and spent many years volunteering to transcribe books into Braille for the CNIB. Both Fay and Clifford were extremely generous with their charitable efforts. They supported a number of Jewish causes as well as many non-Jewish charities whose mission and vision aligned with theirs.
Fay was a trailblazer. She was one of the first two women to graduate from the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Commerce. Her mind was sharper than a scalpel. She continued to learn new skills and try new technologies until the end. Until her passing, Fay continued to participate in the stock market. The night before her passing, she listed the final prices for all the major indices and a few foreign exchange rates. Brokers she dealt with called her for advice about particular stocks, and she usually gave them the right answer.
For Fay, family always came first. She and Cliff were high school sweethearts whose lifelong love affair lasted until Cliff died in 2008. Kerry and her grandchildren have great memories of summer trips to the cabin at Falcon Lake that Cliff built. She also took care of her parents and in-laws for many years as they got older.
Fay was raised in a traditional Jewish home and is the last of her generation. Her upbringing contributed to some of her most notable traits of unrestricted caring, tenacity and fairness. Her belief in human nature was that people were essentially good. Once her trust was gained, it became an everlasting relationship. However, if that trust was lost, efforts to mend the relationship were most often fruitless. Her tenacity was legendary; if she felt a company treated her or her loved ones unfairly, you did not want to be on the receiving end of the phone call instructing you how to make it right. She rarely lost these battles.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Bob Kroeker, for his care and kindness, Dr. Lawrence Homik, Rena Boroditsky and the Chesed Shel Shel Emes, Rabbi Yosef Benarroch of Adas Yeshurun Herzlia for his touching Hesped, best friend Marilyn Arnold with whom she often enjoyed a meal and gossip, and her nephew Ken Roseman who assisted Fay with whatever tasks needed doing.
If so desired, donations may be made to the Fay and Clifford Swartz Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, or a charity of your choice.

Dear Swartz family, extending our heartfelt and deepest sympathy on the sad passing of your family matriarch Fay Swartz. Thank for for sharing this lovely tribute of her commitment to her family and community. Over the years we shared many lovely conversations through her support of the HSC Foundation. A dear soul! Wishing you all peace and comfort in the days ahead! I recently read this touching quote from Anne Frank: 'A person who's happy will make others happy; a person who has courage and faith will never die in misery!'
