CARL SIMONSON

May 3, 1932 - August 22, 2023

Peacefully, on August 22, 2023, with family by his side, Carl passed away at the age of 91 at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg.

Left to cherish his memory is Edie, his wife of 68 years; daughters, Carol (Tommy) and Donna (Wes); grandchildren, Scott (Jenilee), Heather (Chris), Nelson and Joel (Kylee); and great-grandsons, Beck, Brody, Ryder and Loudon. Also survived by brother Ted (Joy); sisters and brother-in-law, Peggy, Betty, Isla, Elaine and Larry.

Carl was predeceased by his parents, Torger and Martha Simonson; siblings, Viola, Gordon, Astrid, Gary, Doug, Dorothy and Lloyd; his in-laws, Harry and May Hagborg; and many brothers and sisters-in-law.

He grew up on the farm in Woodlands, leaving home at a young age to find work. Carl joined the Canadian Army and served in the Korean War. He then entered into a long career with the Winnipeg Fire Department. He was instrumental in the formation of the Rosser Volunteer Fire Department. His accomplishments gave him an immense sense of pride.

He married Edie in 1954 and raised their family in Winnipeg and then Meadows. They later moved to Grosse Isle, and finally their retirement in Gimli. They loved to travel and enjoyed many winters in Arizona. Their home was the gathering place for many occasions, always welcoming friends, and family with great hospitality.

Sincere thanks to those that helped the family over the past years; Dr. Adegbesan, Homecare, Gimli Hospital and Veterans Affairs, and the amazing staff at Deer Lodge who took exceptional care of him during the last year.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Grosse Isle Recreation Centre on September 5, at 1:00 p.m.

If friends so desire, donations can be made to Gimli New Horizons, Box 1821 Gimli, MB R0C 1B0; Grosse Isle Heritage Site, Box 34 Grosse Isle, MB R0C 1G0; Deer Lodge Centre Foundation, 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3 or, a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Sending caring thoughts and sympathy to Edie and family on the passing of Carl. My Dad and Carl both shared a long career with the Winnipeg Fire Department where they met and became good friends. I remember my parents having a good time with them at the New Years Eve celebration in the Recreation Centre for many years and when they got together in Arizona in the winter. Carl was a kind and gentle man whom I will always remember as one of my father's best friends. - Posted by: MARILYN MUTTER (Good friend of my Dad) on: Sep 06, 2023

  • Uncle Carl was always a role model for me growing up. He had fascinating stories about his career and life experiences. He spent a lot of time helping us on the family farm and he was always fun to be around. He loved curling and I had the pleasure of curling with him quite a few times, enjoyed the after-game nightcaps at the curling rink. He was like a mentor to me growing up and l loved spending time with him. He was an inspiration and will be greatly missed. Looking back, he was a huge part of my life as long as I can remember. - Posted by: Robert Hagborg (Nephew) on: Sep 04, 2023

  • Captain Carl taught me well. Great in my eyes! - Posted by: Michael Ruta (His Rookie at 18 Station 1986) on: Sep 04, 2023
