MARY HELEN PATRICIA BUCHANAN

(nee REID)

On Thursday, September 14, 2023, Mary passed away peacefully at Deer Lodge Centre with her family by her side.

Mary will be remembered by her loving husband of 26 years, Grant; her children, Mindy Campbell, Sarah Daeninck (Kevin), Amy Shawcross (Aron) and Jamie Campbell (Denim); her beloved grandchildren, Kaleigh, Charlie, Maisie and Marisa and brother-in-law Garth (Donna). She is also survived by Grant's children, Gregory (Lynette) and Glenn (Nicole) as well as grandchildren, Alasdair, Murdoch, Daylen, Holden and Duncan.

Mary was born in Winnipeg, January 13, 1948 to George and Sarah Reid who predeceased Mary early in her life. Mary was raised by her aunt Betty and uncle Bud Casserly (Toronto) and aunt Maisie Love (Winnipeg). Her cousins, Ann Heuckendorff, John (Nancy) Casserly and Keith (Anne) Love are left to cherish her memory. In 1969, Mary graduated from the Toronto General Hospital School of Nursing and enjoyed a long caring career as a registered nurse. Upon retirement, she pursued Reflexology and practiced for numerous years from her home. Mary took comfort in knitting prayer shawls for friends. Family and friendships were very important to Mary, she was a devoted mother and grandmother and took great pride in all the children's and grandchildren's accomplishments. Mary and Grant were thankful they got to enjoy many wonderful trips across Canada, Scotland, Isle of Man, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and numerous winters south.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. J. Watts and to the staff at Deer Lodge Centre, Lodge 6 East for their care and compassion given to Mary.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 22 at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation on Mary's behalf to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3.

  • I was saddened to hear of Mary's passing after her long battle. I offer my sympathy and condolences to Grant and all the family as well as prayers as they start the grieving journey. The loss of a parent is a difficult event that changes the rest of your life. When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure. May you treasure all your memories of your Mom and may those memories see you through the difficult times ahead. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers in the coming days, weeks and months as you adjust to this new reality. - Posted by: Cathy Savage (Friend) on: Sep 16, 2023

  • I was so terribly saddened by Mary’s passing. She was a dear friend and though she suffered for a long time, I will miss her terribly. Mary had a heart of gold and was one of the kindest people I know. When I had my surgery 3 years ago, she knitted me a prayer shawl and would come regularly with meals or just to visit. “Why do bad things happen to such wonderful people?” There is and never will be an answer. My thoughts and prayers are with Grant and the family as they cope with their loss. Heartfelt condolences, Coralie - Posted by: Coralie Bornais (long time church friend) on: Sep 16, 2023

  • I am so terribly saddened by Mary’s passing and though it’s extremely difficult, she is at peace now and cradled in God’s loving arms. Though our church, I had many many visits with her and to sum it up in one sentence ..,. she was a TRUE lady. She was so incredibly kind to me, especially after my surgery in 2020. She knitted me a prayer shawl which I cherish and was always there for me, I will miss her ready smile and wonderful conversations terribly. My heart goes out to Grant and the family during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of the family. Heartfelt love, Coralie - Posted by: Coralie Bornais (long time church friend) on: Sep 16, 2023

  • It is at a time like this that words cannot express the feelings we have when one looses a dear loved one. We enjoyed the time we got to spend together from Sweet Tomatoes to coffee in the sunroom and the odd Scotch. Rest in peace Mary you will be in our thoughts forever.
