BERNICE LEWIS

(nee KIRK)

May 28, 1931 – September 8, 2023

There’s another sweet soul in heaven.

Bernice passed away peacefully at Birch Lodge, with family by her side. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Anita (Gordie) Allan, Anne (Bud) McLaughlin, Don (Jo-Anne) Lewis and Doug Lewis; by grandchildren Dale (Tanya) and Darren (Sarah) Allan, Stacey (Adrien) Begrand, Jodi and Brittany McLaughlin, Samantha (Devin) Draward, Mandi (Dave) Garton and Michael Russell; by great-grandchildren Dylan, Kimberly, Max and Ben Allan, Liam, Olivia and Zain McLaughlin, Lewis and Myles Draward, Kylynn, Wyatt and Lennix Garton, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Rodney Lewis, her parents William and Margaret Kirk, her brother Harvey Kirk, daughter-in-law Tracy Russell, as well as four sisters-in-law, five brothers-in-law and two nephews.

Bernice was born in the Chumah community, where she attended Sunday school and church. She went to school in Crandall, then completed a secretarial course at Wheat City Business College in Brandon. She was employed in Brandon at the Imperial Bank of Canada, then moved to Vancouver and worked at the City of Vancouver’s Social Welfare Department. After a few years, she returned home and worked at the Royal Bank in Hamiota until her marriage in June of 1954. While they lived on two other farms early in their married life, she and Rodney primarily raised their children on the farm five miles west of Hamiota, where their son, Doug, still lives and farms.

Bernice was active in the community, being a member of the Chumah Ladies’ Club and the Hamiota United Church Womens’ group, singing in the Hamiota church choir, submitting the Chumah News to the Hamiota Echo, supporting her children in their pursuits, and assisting with farm work.

Rod and Bernice moved to Hamiota in 2000 and enjoyed town living until their move to Lilac Residence in 2013, then to Birch Lodge Personal Care Home in 2014, where they spent their final years.

The family would like to thank the staff of Birch Lodge for the exceptional care she received while residing there.

The Celebration of Life service will be held at the Hamiota United Church, Hamiota on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will at the Hamiota Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Birch Lodge Personal Care Home, payable to Prairie Mountain Health, c/o Hamiota District Health Centre, Hamiota, MB, R0M 0T0, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Messages of condolence can be shared at www.campbellfuneralhome.ca.
