STELLA MAZUR

With great sorrow we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother on September 17, 2023 at River East Personal Care Home at the age of 101.

Stella leaves to mourn her children, Elizabeth Kerwin, Myron (June Kusnick), Evelyn Shepherd (Gerry), David (Joanna), Bernie (Carol); grandchildren, Jessica Monita (David), Jennifer, Stephanie, Kevin, Scott and many relatives and friends.

Stella was predeceased by her husband Peter in 2015 after 67 years of marriage.

Stella was born, raised and lived her entire life in Transcona. She worked very hard even as a child. She was able to complete her grade 12 education but did not have the opportunity to go further. She told stories of working in the farmers’ fields in North Transcona and later worked as a maid in homes on Wellington Crescent. Highlights of her youth included travelling with one of her friends to Malachi Lake, Ontario. She remembers how scared they were getting off the train and walking in the dark to the cottage. She also took a trip to Vancouver with her girlfriend’s family.

With a family of five children, she was always creative in how to feed and clothe everyone. She was a great cook often making perogies, cabbage rolls, soups, pies and pastries and canning fruit and vegetables. Relatives and friends never left the home hungry. Many adventures by bus took place to The Bay or Eatons Clearance Centre in search of the best deals.

After having children, Stella worked part-time at The Bay downtown in the basement cafeteria and later the Paddlewheel restaurant. She enjoyed the friendships that she made there.

Stella loved her grandchildren and would spoil them at every opportunity. She was known as “Baba.”

Stella enjoyed bowling, curling and singing in the choir at St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church. She was fond of going on casino trips to the United States. She never came home saying she lost money. She also travelled with Peter to Las Vegas and Vancouver to visit her brother. Another memorable trip was with her youngest son Bernie and his family to Banff and Jasper.

The family thanks the staff at River East Personal Care Home for the compassionate care and the love they gave to our mother. Mom was known throughout the complex as she would travel to every corner of the building in her wheelchair. She would often be at the front entrance greeting people as they arrived. The staff became an addition to her family as Alzheimer's took its toll on her.

A private family funeral was held at St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church followed by burial at Transcona Cemetery.
