ALBERT (BERT) DE LEEUW
On Wednesday, September 20, 2023 we lost a beautiful man.
Bert is survived by his wife Marilyn and son Chris, and was predeceased in 2016 by his son Rob.
He will be missed by his brothers, Harry (Jane), Danny, Marcel, and David (Cathy); brother-in-law, Lorne (Wendy) Novak; as well as many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.
Throughout his life, Bert had a strong faith in God and prayer. Bert was born and raised in St. Boniface and attended Provencher School and University of Manitoba, as well as pilot training with the RCAF in 1964/65.
His work career began with Proctor & Gamble. Bert then co-founded Delbro Real Estate and was active in the City, Provincial, and Federal Real Estate Boards. Bert also was a member of St. Boniface/St. Vital Kiwanis Club for 50 years. He volunteered as a Board Member for the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation as well as St. Amant Foundation.
Bert's great loves included Lake of the Woods, boating and fishing, especially with the "Magnificent Seven" and his tractor. He was an excellent builder. His pride and joy was the family cottage he built on Echo Bay. He had a lifetime interest in sports, playing football as a young man and hockey throughout his life.
He loved to travel. Bert and Marilyn enjoyed many trips across Canada as well as Internationally. One very special moment in his life occurred in Palm Springs. On attending an Air Show he saw the Chipmunk Plane 043 that he soloed in when training with the RCAF. The owner not only invited him on a flight but allowed him to take the controls.
Bert, you are now free to fly as high as you can go. Your accomplishments have helped many and will leave a lasting impression. We will miss your dear heart.
Many thanks to Dr. E. Orlikow and all the staff at SBGH, 5B medicine. Your care and caring made the difference in the last few years and days of Bert's life.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in Bert’s memory may be made to the Parish St. Timothy, 135 John Forsyth Road, Wpg, MB R2N 1R3, St. Amant Foundation 204-258-7052, or a charity of your choice.
In keeping with Bert’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a funeral mass celebrating his life will be held Thursday, October 12, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the Parish of St. Timothy, 135 John Forsyth Road in south St. Vital.

Our sincere condolences to Marilyn and the extended family on their loss. Bert and I attended St. Paul’s College at U of M in the early sixties. The word ‘kind’ has come up in many of the comments, and it was the word to best describe him. My husband and I hadn’t met him in over thirty years, but a week before his death, we ran into Bert waiting for Marilyn to pick him up at the doors to the Salisbury House in St. Vital. He had his cane and I had mine. We chatted about ageing and health and 60 years slipped away. On our return from a trip to Toronto, we were saddened to hear of his passing. Our prayers go out to those who loved him. Rachel DeGagne and Ken Sturk - Posted by: Rachel DeGagne (Friend) on: Oct 19, 2023

Approx 32 years ago Bert & Harry DeLeeuw believed in me and hired me at Del Bro Real Estate. They put me under their wings, trained me personally to do things the right way, and treated you like family! Bert believed in having fun inc Del Bro Lip Sync, golf tourneys, Solid Gold contests, and more. Clearly the best Brokerage inc the agents they hired to work side by side with. People over profit was very important ! Fun makes you money and I try to instill the same values in my Brokerage to this day! To the entire DeLeeuw family our deepest condolences... Bert.. Thank U for being U ! Glenn & Brenda Kisil - Posted by: Glenn Kisil (friend & colleague ) on: Sep 26, 2023

When I first met Bert, it was not in Winnipeg, rather it was 3100kms from Winnipeg in Palm Springs, CA. I joined the cycling group, comprised mostly Winnipegers & ex Winnipegers. Bert was a person that was easy to get to know. You were automatically better off knowing Bert. I remember Bert organizing bus trips to Los Angeles from Palm Springs when the Winnipeg Jets were visiting the Los Angles area. Bert you will be sadly missed by so many of your good friends. God bless Bert & Marilyn & may the Good Lord welcome Bert into his arms. - Posted by: Ron MacKenzie (Friend) on: Sep 23, 2023

I send my love and prayers to Bert’s family and relatives and was saddened to hear the news. I was blessed to have known Bert and Marilyn many, many years ago when I was with their son Chris. Bert was a wonderful and kind hearted man that enjoyed spending time with my son Sean when he was a toddler and taught him to fish on the dock at the their cottage. After Chris and I were no longer together and my son was older, he would meet up with Sean during the Christmas time and both go out to hand out hampers to those that needed that extra boost to enjoy Christmas. It was a some of the memories I will hold deep in my heart for the warmth and care that both he and Marilyn always provided and will remember his laugh and smiles when I was around them and how much they cared for my son Sean, when I was a young single parent. Bert, may you rise and shine brightly in heaven, knowing that you were very loved and will be missed by so many, but that you made such an impact to those you have left behind and has given us all such wonderful memories to hold onto. God bless, - Posted by: Shannon McCormick (friend of family) on: Sep 23, 2023
