GEORGE ROBERT NICKOLAYCHUK

May 4, 1938 - September 22, 2023

On September 22, 2023, George, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully with family at his bedside. He passed away from heart failure at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg.

George was born at Northbank, Alberta on May 4, 1938 to Bill and Elizabeth Nickolaychuk. He studied agriculture at University of British Columbia before embarking on his career as a farmer for 50 years in Smoky Lake, Alberta. George was an avid sports fan and athlete. Hockey and baseball were his favourite sports. After selling the family farm, George and his wife, Christine, moved to Winnipeg so they could participate in the activities/sports and experiences of their grandchildren.

Many of the tributes that poured in after his passing described George as a gentleman and great baseball player. His baseball position was as the catcher and his aspirations took him to Florida for training camp. Several comments described George and his friend, Bill, as the best pitcher/catcher combinations around. He was also known for his dancing moves and his wide smile as he drifted around the dance floor to a good polka. Whenever his son encouraged George to buy more expensive farm equipment, George’s answer was “At least when people drive by my farm and see my equipment, they know it is paid for.” George was a smart and practical farmer who never lived beyond his means. He placed family and friends as his top priority and he loved to entertain and socialize. George had a quiet nature and a calming presence. He worked hard on the farm, but he also enjoyed his supervisory roles. One of his favorite lines was “I love hard work. I can watch it all day.”

George is lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Christine; son Brent (Lisa); his grandchildren, Tanner, Dylan and Beth; and his daughter Gwen and her partner, Pal.

Special thanks to his caregivers at Brightwater Senior Living and to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital.

A private family service is planned.
