Rick took his last breath with his wife of 46 years, Sara Jane, at his side. The lung transplant he gratefully received April 12, 2023, was followed by a cascade of complications that finally became insurmountable.
He is survived by Sara Jane, daughter Keli and son-in-law Dave Sikkema, son Paul and daughter-in-law Leah Klassen and grandchildren, Annika and Elliot.
Many thanks to John Longhurst and the Winnipeg Free Press for following his transplant journey. Rick would encourage everyone to Sign Up For Life https://signupforlife.ca/signUp.html

I had the great honour to know Rick first as a student and then as a colleague at Menno Simons College. ‘Blessed are the peacemakers,’ so it’s said, and that certainly applied to Rick. It seemed that when Rick walked into the room, his calm, assured and kindly manner would immediately lower the level of tension. His last days also showed him to be a man great courage and fortitude as he met the challenges he faced with a gentle grace. I will miss him. - Posted by: Paul Redekop (friend and colleague) on: Nov 06, 2023

I am so sorry to hear if Rick’s passing! He was my first teacher when I entered university as an adult learner and he made the transition from full time working mom to university student majoring in conflict resolution very easy and FUN! His gentleness and humour made the better part of many weeks, and I will always think of Rick whenever I see a lemon. My deepest condolences to his entire family.
