JOAN PATRICIA WREN

(nee CRUICKSHANK)

It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Joan Wren on October 2, 2023, at Riverview Health Centre, at the age of 93.

She is survived by her son Graham Wren, her daughter Christine Wren, their families, and the family of her late daughter, Pamela Rolle.

Born and raised in southern Ontario, she met John Edwin Wren, her loving spouse until his death in 1995.

Joan was a nurse. She was a lover of the arts, and painting was her passion. She was an active member of the Forum Art Institute and was a board member. She enjoyed crocheting, and always did the daily crosswords.

Joan found much beauty in nature. She loved flowers and her garden was her sanctuary. Joan enjoyed birdwatching and butterflies. Joan also enjoyed camping and travel, journeying to France and Greece as well as Mexico. Most of all, she loved her family. Sunday dinners followed by a card game and family get-togethers were Joan’s favourite times. She identified with "Joan the Wad", a mythical figure whose "light would show the way". Our Joan was our light, who guided us through life.

Joan will be placed next to John Wren at the St. Vital Cemetery, with a private family ceremony.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • To Graham, Christine and Pam's family, my deepest condolences on the passing of your Mom and my Aunt Joan. My Dad Gordon always enjoyed discussing painting with his kid sister, and the two had memorable art course summits in the Collingwood, Ontario area. Later, Joan developed a regular long-distance friendship with my mother Marie Cruickshank. Unfortunately, with phone number cancelations due to moves, the two lost touch during the last months of their lives. My Mom passed on Sunday, December 10, 2023, peacefully and painlessly, at Evergreen Retirement Community in Mississauga, ON with me at her side. She was 50 days shy of her 97th birthday. I can see your mom as the calm, problem-solving matriarch "Joan The Wad", and loved her dry sense of humor. Your Dad John... well, he had personality to burn, didn't he? He was taken far too young. If anyone would like to keep the family connection going, I would really like that. Mom did a tremendous amount of work on all our family trees. Sympathies and best wishes. Cousin Jim Cruickshank. - Posted by: JAMES R CRUICKSHANK (Nephew) on: Dec 28, 2023

  • Joan was a loving devoted wife, mother and friend. Her husband John was my boss when we worked together ar Standard Tube Canada. They opened their home to my family for many years and made Christmas so special and memorable. We will always remember Joan’s artistic talent, warm heart, and devotion to her family. A truly special person. Gene and Ollie Dunn - Posted by: Gene Dunn (Friend) on: Oct 09, 2023

  • Sincere condolences to Graham, Christine, Pam’s daughter and your families. Harry connected with John and Bernie through work. Joanie became a dear sidekick at conventions/dinners.
