It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, brother and grandfather, Herman Hildebrand, at the age of 86, at St. Boniface Hospital on October 15, 2023, after a short hospital stay.
Herman leaves to mourn his wife of 64 years, Sue; his two daughters, Debra (Terry) Gallinger and Donna (David) Holm; along with grandsons, Andres, Jürgen and Tristan. He will also be missed by step-grandchildren, Carly and Kristian Gallinger; as well as brothers, Hank (Linda) and Peter (Hermina); sisters, Janice (Abe), Judy and Audrey (Jim); cousins, nieces and nephews, and numerous friends and acquaintances. Herman was predeceased by his parents, John and Helen Hildebrand of Grunthal, his sister Lorraine; brothers-in-law, Dave Warkentin and Johnny Driedger; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elsie Harms, Irene and Henry Kroeker and Elfrieda and Al Brownlee.
Herman was born into a farming family in Lowe Farm, MB, and at the age of 14, moved with his family to Grunthal. After graduation he enjoyed a successful business life in the farm implement business, moving up in various positions with International Harvester and Allis Chalmers in Yorkton, Dauphin, Toronto and Winnipeg, eventually becoming a business owner of Argus Farm Equipment in Winnipeg and Clearspring International in Steinbach. Near the end of his working life he was with Sun Life until his retirement.
Dad enjoyed many pursuits and interests including many sports, playing hockey until age 72, also having played football, baseball and curling, enjoying Winnipeg Blue Bombers season tickets for 57 years and Winnipeg Jets season tickets. He was an enthusiastic reader, devouring many books, including the Bible and he loved a great theology lecture, attending First Mennonite Church for many years. Dad sat on several church boards, and committees over the years, never losing his love of business. He and Mom were fortunate to travel together, early on to western Canada, camping, and later to warm destinations including Mexico, Florida, Jamaica, Germany, Italy, Alaska, and especially Hawaii. Dad loved to entertain, being king of the barbeque, caesar salad chef extraordinaire, and excellent mixer of martinis.
Herman was interested in people, in what motivated them and how he could best interact with them. He was witty and funny, loving one-liners and jokes, especially in Low German. He was a lifelong learner who kept his positive attitude despite set-backs and disappointments and would encourage others to do the same, having little time for those who lived in negativity. Despite his latest health struggles, he powered through every painful moment with grace and never gave up hope that he would return home. Herman was a big personality, possessing a huge heart and will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 20, 2023, at First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Ave. in Winnipeg, with reception to follow. Interment at Grunthal Cemetery.
We wish to thank the medical staff at Seven Oaks and St. Boniface Hospitals and Dr. Dennis Caners for many years of excellent care.
