DAVID HAROLD GUSE

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of David Harold Guse on October 11, 2023 at the age of 66.

David was born in Sudbury, Ontario on October 27, 1956. He graduated from Cambrian College in Sudbury as an instrumentation technologist and began his career with Inco in Thompson. In 1981, David took a position with the City of Winnipeg where he remained for over 30 years. Most of his career with the City was with the Water and Waste department where he ultimately retired from his position of Superintendent in 2011. David was especially proud of the work his department did during the flood of the century in 1997.

David was an excellent cook, the best travel companion, proud dad, animal lover, and dedicated Winnipeg Jets fan and season ticket holder for many years. David had a lifelong passion for hockey that gave him immense joy. His childhood memories of cottage life at Windy Lake made being near or on the water where he loved to be. Being out in his boat fishing was the happiest place on earth for him.

David was a man of few words with a gruff exterior but also a champion of what is fair, just, and decent. He had a kind and loving heart. His love language was to cook and nurture his loved ones, to do little thoughtful things to make their lives easier, and he always listened for clues for what would make you happy or lift your day. He always made you feel cared for and special to him. He had a wicked sense of humour that quietly came out of nowhere.

David experienced profound health issues over his lifetime, starting with Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 21, several later bouts of cancer, and significant heart disease. He was a tenacious and stubborn man who fought for each and every day he had on this earth. In spite of being a man with one of the biggest hearts, in the end his heart failed him.

We are broken-hearted but forever grateful for the time we had together. David is survived by his wife, Kara, children, Brynn and Cameron, his mother Christina, and sister Carolyn (Larry) and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. David was predeceased by his father Harold and sister Brenda.

David’s family wishes to extend our greatest appreciation for the excellent care provided by St. Boniface Hospital over the years. Special heartfelt thanks to his primary care provider, Dr. Lee Cummings and Lanka for their warmth and genuine compassion.

A Celebration of Life service will take place in the near future.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider donating to the Winnipeg Jets True North Youth Foundation in David’s name. David believed strongly in the importance of sport in children’s lives.
