LORENE ADELE ABBOTT
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lorene Abbott (nee Murray), surrounded by family, at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC.
Lorene was loving wife to Reg for 70 years, a loving mother to Glenn (Heather), Cynthia (Harald) and Kim, a special Nana to Robyn (Spencer), Andrew (Hannah), Rebecca (Scott), Alanna (Nina) and Sarah (Anthony); and she was absolutely delighted to be Nana GG (great-grandmother) to Ewan, Matilda and Reggie.
Lorene was born and raised in rural Victoria, working on the family's mink farm with her mother until being courted and swept away by her adoring hockey-player husband. They married in 1953 and moved to Windsor, Ontario, where all three of their children were born, before settling in to raise their family in Winnipeg in 1960. Lorene and Reg returned to Vancouver Island in 1983 and have since been joined by all their children in retirement here.
Our mother was an enthusiastic sports fan, a graceful Mavericks square dance partner for many years, and an avid traveller. She especially enjoyed winter road trip visits to Palm Springs (oh, the shopping!) and Arizona, many years of cross-prairie road trips to Winnipeg, and overseas travel to Britain and Cyprus to visit her daughter and granddaughters.
Mom was an elegant hostess to Dad's business dinners and for all kinds of family feasts and celebrations. She sewed much of both daughters' clothing in the family's early years, then turned to knitting, crocheting and needlepoint as her evening hobbies, turning out numerous treasured keepsakes, including special baby shawls for her grandchildren.
A heartfelt thank you to the nurses and doctors at the Royal Jubilee Hospital's Post Anaesthesia Care Unit, and to her family doctor Tim Troughton for their sensitive and loving care. There will be no service as per Lorene's wishes.
The BC SPCA, Winnipeg Humane Society and Our Place Society of Victoria were some of Mom's favourite charities.
