Peacefully on Monday, October 30, 2023, Joan Margaret Cameron. Predeceased by her parents, John Duncan Cameron and Jean Coull (Mitchell) Cameron and her cousin Marlene (Mitchell) Tyler.
Joan was born in Winnipeg in 1936 and grew up in St. James. Joan received her B.A. in English and Political Science from the University of Manitoba in 1957. She worked briefly for the U of M before embarking on a career with the Canadian department of External Affairs in 1958. Joan’s 36 years of public service took her around the world, with postings in Ottawa, Wellington, Canberra, Washington, Manila, Bogata and Hong Kong.
Upon retiring, Joan made her home back in Winnipeg, and continued to enjoy travel in the form of many tropical vacations and regular visits to the Schmidt’s and Rismondo’s summer cottages. Joan loved to swim, golf, and play Bridge and Scrabble. She took pleasure from beautiful things, including her expansive art collection that represented her decades of world adventure.
Joan will be missed by the Schmidt family including her goddaughter Joan Schmidt (Corey Glowacki) and sisters, Jillian (Jeff) Lamothe and Anna Schmidt and their families; by her Mitchell family cousins, Kathleen (George) Rismondo, Blair (Teresa) Mitchell, Maureen Mitchell, Gerry Tyler, and their families; and by her dear friends.
Many thanks to the staff of Poseidon Long-Term Care Home for their care and kindness.
Cremation has taken place and a private gathering for burial of ashes in the Cameron family plot at Brookside Cemetery will occur at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Joan’s memory to Parkinson Canada. https://www.parkinson.ca
