JOAN AUDREY CHARLES

(nee BRICKELL)

December 18, 1929 – November 8, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother Joan on November 8, 2023. In addition to being a wonderful mother, she was a grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend to many.



She leaves to mourn her 2 sons, Brian and Michael (Jeff), grandchildren Timothy, Jeffrey, and Emily, her sister Elaine and nieces and nephew.



She was predeceased by her husband Gordon, and grandson Daniel.

Joan was born in Winnipeg and attended Cecil Rhodes School, and in her late teens played Women’s Hockey for the Weston Wolverines. Joan enjoyed her youth at the family cottage at Lac Lu, Ontario.



In her early career, Joan worked as a telegraph operator at CN Telegraph, located at Portage and Main. Later she worked as a secretary for the head office of McLeod’s Department store.

Joan met Gordon, and they were married in 1958 when they moved to Haney Street in Charleswood where Gord built their first home. In the early 80’s they moved to St. Vital. They were married for 58 years before Gord’s passing in 2016.



Joan loved her music and spent many hours playing her electric organ. Joan and Gordon enjoyed wintering in Texas with family and friends, and summers at the family cottage at Spruce Sands. She loved long walks. Joan was a volunteer at St. Amant Centre for several years in the 80’s.



Brian and Michael would like to thank the staff at the places that Joan called home after Gord’s passing, The Parkway, Riverwood Square, and Riverview Health Centre.



Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Internment and a celebration of life is to be held in late spring of 2024.
