DORIS SYLVIA QUINN

March 28, 1948 (Easter Sunday) - November 17, 2023

Doris passed away at the Grace Hospital after a stay of several weeks following a bad fall. The challenges she faced in recent years were also aggravated during her hospitalization. Her last few days were spent peacefully. We want to thank the entire medical & staff team who provided such compassionate care to Doris while in hospital.

Doris was born in St. Boniface, MB and raised in Transcona, MB. After graduating from high school with honours, she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba and became a meteorologist. She worked in Winnipeg for several years for the Meteorological Service of Canada before being seconded to DND and moving to the CFB at Baden, Germany, where she served as Captain. After returning to Canada, she was stationed at Resolute Bay, NWT and subsequently as an instructor near Ottawa, before returning to Winnipeg where she spent the rest of her career at the DND School of Meteorology.

Doris loved to travel. Her first trip was by ship to England in 1957. Other travel over many years

took her back to England, and to Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and all over Canada.

Doris had diverse talents and interests, including knitting, sewing, obtaining a pilot's license, curling, and sailing. She had a very long involvement with the United Church, at both the local and regional levels, and served on multiple committees, as Treasurer of her church and as a choir member for many years.

Doris was very outgoing and loved nothing more than spending time with people, including numerous close friends, primary among them Dave and Diane Law, at church, in the community and especially at gatherings at home, which was always open to family and friends.

Doris was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Ethel Quinn, and by her husband of almost 30 years, Jack Armstrong. She is survived by her sister Kay (Ralph) Lavalley, daughter Tanya (Shane) Sattler, Jack’s children Erin, Pat (Bob) Lowe, Terry (Marla), Rick and Craig (Suzanne), eight grandchildren, two goddaughters, a Little Sister, and Jake the cat – the last in a long list of cats and dogs in her life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North Kildonan United Church, CancerCare Manitoba or Salvation Army Manitoba Division.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at 2:30 p.m. at the North Kildonan United Church, 174 Pentland St., Winnipeg, with a reception to follow.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • While I have heard lots of good things about Doris and her involvement with the United Church, I got to know her as a curler. We curled together for a couple of years at West St. Paul curling club on Wednesday mornings prior to the Covid pandemic. We had fun curling together and then got to know each other a little better during our social time after the game. - Posted by: Berna Walichnowski (friend) on: Dec 03, 2023

  • Sue and we’re very sad to learn of Doris’s passing. She and her husband Jack had encouraged us to join their curling and sailing clubs where we became good friends. Doris was very involved in the workings and promotion of these organizations as well as many others. We extend our condolences to family and friends. - Posted by: Craig and Sue Mackenzie (Friend) on: Nov 26, 2023

  • My condolences to Kay, Ralph and all of Doris’s family. Doris and I grew up next door to each other and at 4 years old became lifelong friends. We walked to school together for 12 years and were fortunate to live in a neighborhood with so many friends. Doris and Jack shared a wonderful life together with many great adventures. I will miss our catch up brunches and our happy conversations. Rest in peace my friend. Marilyn Hiebert - Posted by: Marilyn Hiebert (Friend and neighbor ) on: Nov 25, 2023
