Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY GENIK
Our Shirley passed suddenly at home after bravely coping with numerous health issues over the past few years.
She will be lovingly remembered by Greg her husband of 45 years; daughters, Alexandra (Joey) and Julia, and her cherished grandson Constantine; brother-in-law Paul Genik; sister Margaret Simmons; abundant wonderful relatives and community of friends. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Steve and Jane (nee Griffiths) Peepchack and in-laws, Con and Liz (Torbiak) Genik; and brothers, Steven and Sid Peepchack; sister Pat and brother Bill Hollingshead.
Born in Winnipeg and raised in Anola, her small town sensibilities guided her approach to life. Shirley graduated from Springfield Collegiate then completed numerous courses related to her career and life interests. It was during her time working as an adolescent counselor that she met Greg. They married soon after, moving immediately to Vancouver with Greg’s job where she furthered her career in retail management. As they returned to Winnipeg, she delighted in being a mother, doting on her precious girls. When the time was right Shirley returned to the workforce with Safeway, then eventually realized her calling with the Winnipeg School division. Here she had an opportunity to use her giftedness, caring for children, in an education setting especially with kids who’d experienced trauma. She excelled at being a wife and mother and at her career vocation. Shirley approached life with an artistic flair. While in Vancouver she collaborated with a close friend to publish a liqueur cook book and to open a store front Christmas business. Her passion for cooking and entertaining was engaged operating a successful events catering business. Always humble, Shirley was especially honoured to receive the Volunteer Manitoba Investors Group Art & Culture Award For Volunteer Excellence. This was in addition to being presented with Jazz Winnipeg honours for her invaluable contribution and continued commitment to the Jazz Winnipeg Festival 1989 to 1999. She truly appreciated the enduring connections she forged with accomplished international and local jazz, blues and soul artists the likes of Jon Hendricks, Jay McShann, Sonny Rollins, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Buddy Guy, Holy Cole and James Brown. She was a key contributor in furthering Winnipeg’s reputation for providing personalized hospitality excellence to visiting musical artists. Shirley was a longtime coordinator of the IHMS annual tea. She loved the outdoors, animals, Little House on the Prairie and Leonard Cohen. Her summer respite was her special time spent at Ukrainian Park. She enjoyed trips to Mexico and Cuba, crafting, canning, simple pleasures, and was an avid reader. She was an enthusiastic cheerleader of family and friends.
She and the family are truly grateful to her home care team for their outstanding personal care provided.
At her request a private service has taken place arranged by Seasons Funeral Services. We look forward to visiting with Shirley’s friends and family on the evening of Monday, December 4, 2023. Please RSVP to https://celebratingshirl.rsvpify.com by December 1, 2023.
