SHIRLEY O MOTT

(nee SMITH)

1927 - 2023

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Shirley Mott, announce her passing on November 17, 2023, peacefully in her home and surrounded by family at the age of 96.

She is predeceased by her husband, Ernie who passed 19 years ago to the day, her parents Malvina and Wilfred Smith, stepfather Harry Morrick (Pop), sister Phyllis Kartinen and beloved son in-law Ken Kulbaba, along with many loving friends she met along the way.

Left to remember her, are her children, Cheryl Mott, Susan Mott (Kulbaba), Allan Mott (Grace), Laurie Bowman (Bill), Linda Stark (Hans), Janet Davies. Also survived by six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren who fondly called her “Mucka”.

Shirley was born at Port Arthur General Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ontario on August 9, 1927. She attended Port Arthur Collegiate Institute. Her first job was with the Pulp and Paper Mill as a stenographer and then at the Port Arthur Shipyards as the switchboard operator.

She married Ernie on February 4, 1946. Their early years were spent in Thunder Bay, then Atikokan, Ontario, and later planting roots in Winnipeg.

Some of Shirley’s interests were curling, playing Rumolli and hosting lunches with her friends and Christmas Eve parties for the neighbors. She loved being with her girls while playing some Bingo or taking a trip down to the States. She was also a long-time member of the CWL at St. Bernadette’s Parish.

Shirley spent all her summers at their cottage that she and Ernie built on Eva Lake, Ontario. She will be remembered as the candy lady for her kind generosity of handing out treats to everyone who stopped in to say hello. She was known for her famous donuts, homemade buns and her quick wit with the odd cuss and an ice-cold beer in hand. She loved hosting home cooked meals for her family every Sunday up until the time of Covid.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to all the health care professionals and staff who have cared for her, especially Paula, Audrey, Felma, her nurse, Glenda and her footcare nurse, Lin. Also Dr. Casey Woo and his wonderful staff.

As per Shirley’s wishes, no service will be held. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Winnipeg Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
We love you mom, and you will forever be in our hearts.

I am at peace, my soul at rest
There is no need for tears.
For with your love,
I was so blessed
For all those many years
