MURRAY BROWN

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and husband Murray Brown at the age of 86 years. He passed away peacefully on November 29, 2023 at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Murray will be greatly missed by his wife Edna whom he was married to for 61 years; his children, Brian (Teresa), Leanna (Glenn); his grandchildren, Cara (Scott) and Dustin (Marin); his great-grandchildren, Chase, Jacob, Hadley and Grayson as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dad was predeceased by his parents, Annie Blenkin and Alden Brown; and his brother Barry.

Dad was born in Sintaluta, Saskatchewan on May 8, 1937. He spent most of his childhood in the Sintaluta area. He enjoyed hockey, baseball and playing the violin. At the age of 19, Dad met the love of his life Edna. They were married on August 25, 1962 in Wolseley, Saskatchewan and soon after they relocated to Winnipeg. After expanding the family with two children, they purchased their forever home in St. James, where they lived for 54 years and developed lifelong friendships with the “Vimy Road Gang”.

As an adult, camping was one of Dad’s favourite things to do over a 53 year period and was a mandatory activity in Dad’s life. He travelled coast to coast across Canada with his trailers, as far north as Alaska as well as down into the southern United States. Camping included a 34 year stay at Idle Wheels until the age of 85. Dad loved to travel, and if he wasn’t driving, he was flying to Mexico or the Caribbean.

Dad was an avid curler and spent several years at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club. He played baseball for Heritage Victoria in the men’s fastball league and played on the HV old timers hockey team. Besides his love for playing sports, he enjoyed watching curling on TV, cheering on his Jets and Bombers and his favourite Nascar drivers. Another passion of his was to watch his kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoy their sporting activities and he loved playing with the many grandpets.

Dad spent his working career fixing motors that ranged from large diesel farm equipment to small engines. After retirement in 1997, Dad’s main hobby was woodworking and making all sorts of wood crafts. Dad taught us by example, to work hard and to do it yourself so it was done right. Dad led a full, happy and healthy life. You knew things were going well when Dad was whistling. This happened often in his lifetime and we expect to hear his whistle continue to follow us in spirit.

Cremation and Celebration of Life have taken place. The family would like to thank the Palliative Home Care staff for their care and attention to Dad.
