Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN MICHAEL UNRAU
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Unrau on December 8, 2023 at his home after a short, but hard-fought battle with ALS.
John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Pat; his children, Joanne (Todd), Jennifer (Ed) and Ryan; his grandchildren, Tyler, Katelyn, Hayley and Grayson; his brothers, Dave, Peter (Ruth), Walt (Carol), Paul (Gloria) and Phillip, and his sisters, Esther (Lorne), Clara (Rich), Mary Anne (Tom) and Cathy (Phil); sister-in-law Evelyn (Glen); as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Henry and Susie Unrau; and his sister-in-law Helen.
John was born in the small town of Boissevain, MB. He grew up on a farm with a large and loving family. In 1969, he moved to Winnipeg to attend Red River College where he became a journeyman carpenter. John worked for several housing companies before venturing out on his own to form NRG Industries Ltd. and then Cedar Log MB Inc. He spent his last 25 years framing houses for A & S Homes. He would often say he was building a city.
John loved sports. Over the years he played hockey and softball. He enjoyed golfing and playing slo-pitch baseball at Victoria Beach where he owned a cottage. Victoria Beach was his favourite place to be. He would spend many hours just sitting on the deck, reading the newspaper, and watching people walk by.
John was a caring and generous man. He was the life of the party and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, December 18 at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ALS Society of Manitoba

John, Johnny, farmer John of late, Words are not near enough for me to say of a friendship you gave to us! You were a man of few words, but what you spoke said it all! We were friends for over 25 years plus! Never a cross word said! You talked about your family and how “family” get togethers were so important! We thank you for being part of our life. You supported us during a dark time and made it bearable. Life is just so unfair! You were taken far too soon! We are thankful that you gave us friendship, laughter. Peace be with you without pain. Rest in peace our friend. Xoxo - Posted by: Hugh and Carol-Anne (Friends) on: Dec 17, 2023
