DESMOND BUTLER

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Desmond Roger Butler, on December 21, 2023 after a long and productive life.

Des was predeceased by his daughter, Virginia; his granddaughter Karen; and his brothers, Rene and Aidan. He is survived by his wife Edna; his daughters, Nancy (Trevor) and Cindy; sons, Larry (Dorothy) and Jeff (Alix). He is also survived by granddaughters, Morgan, Madison, Carling and Dayna; and great-grandchildren, Rhyder, Summer, and Brooklyn.

Des was born in Winnipeg in 1928. He graduated from St. Paul’s High School and went on for training in his career as an X-ray technician. He worked for 42 years for Manitoba X-ray Clinic before retirement.

During his younger days, he met the love of his life, Edna, and they were married in 1951 and just recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary, a remarkable accomplishment. Des and Edna were blessed with five children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In the 1970s, Des and Edna bought a cabin at Moose Lake, and this became the gathering spot for many summer vacations and weekends. Des loved to fish either off the dock or in his boat, and many happy hours were spent playing games, eating great meals and just generally enjoying family life. Des and Edna would also go in the winter to cross country ski, an activity they pursued actively for many years.

Des was always willing to volunteer his time, especially for causes involving people with special needs. He was instrumental in developing and maintaining two summer camps that were enjoyed by the residents of the Portage Developmental Centre. Later, after retirement, he spent countless hours at St. Amant maintaining wheelchairs and helping in a variety of ways including serving on various committees. In his younger years, Des was active in the Knights of Columbus, and spent a year as Grand Knight.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations can be made to St. Amant Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I am so very sorry for the loss of your husband, father, and grandfather. I remember him from our teenage years as a kind and welcoming man! I was thinking about Ginny and her wonderful gifts and especially her acumen and leadership in the bridge playing community - even writing books on bridge. She led that community as a volunteer for ages. She would have seen how to do it from her Dad! I am sure they are together now and at peace! Hugs to all from Catriona (Triona) Younger. - Posted by: Catriona Younger (Friend of Ginny’s) on: Dec 30, 2023
