HENRY TEICHROEB

November 20, 1932 – December 27, 2023

It is with profound sadness and deep love that the family mourns the passing of Henry (Heinrich) Teichroeb at Concordia Hospital on December 27, 2023, at the age of 91 years due to age-related health complications.

Henry and his twin brother were born on November 20th, 1932, to Abram and Katarina (nee Letkemann) Teichroeb in Osterwick, Ukraine, which was at the time under the brutal Stalinist regime of the former USSR. He was the second born of the twins and the final of his parents' eight children.

In 1943, at the age of eleven, Henry and his family were forced to flee their home due to the events of The Second World War. They eventually ended up in a refugee camp in Germany and in 1947 were resettled to the Volendam Colony in Paraguay, where Henry grew into a man. He laboured to carve the fledgling Volendam Colony out of the tropical rainforest and establish agricultural land from the wilderness. Here Henry was baptised in 1955 upon the profession of his faith in Jesus Christ and later that same year married Wera Moskot. To them were born daughter Waldtraud in 1956 and son Werner in 1959.

The family immigrated to Winnipeg in January 1960 and settled permanently in North Kildonan, where a third child, a son, Wilfried, was born to them in 1966. In Canada Henry toiled as a construction labourer, from mucking basements to shingling roofs, to pay off the family’s immigration debts and provide for his family. He eventually settled into drywalling as his trade, later establishing Henry Teichroeb and Sons Construction Company in 1988. The venture was short-lived, and he retired in 1993 when his body could no longer gather the strength to sling sheets.

Henry’s two great passions in life were camping and fishing and his burgeoning family. When he wasn’t working, he took every opportunity regardless of the season to escape to some body of water to assail the aquatic life that lurked below the surface. Most often it was Nutimik Lake in the Whiteshell and Lockport, but he also made many excursions to the interlake and northern Manitoba, particularly Gillam where he engaged in epic battles with one monstrous northern pike after another. In those places he frequented he was affectionately known as “the Legend” for his fishing prowess. His other great passion and pride were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Although the parting is difficult, Henry’s gentle spirit lives on in the memory of his wife of sixty-eight years, Wera; son-in-law Dennis Guenther and grandchildren Caroline (Bob) Smith, and Tom (Michelle); son Werner, his wife Brenda, and grandchildren Adam (Amber), Kali (Mike) Braun, Ashley (John) Tavares, and Brandon Irwin; son Wilfried, his wife Lisa, and grandchildren Matthew (Jasmine), Layla (Thomas) Guenther, and Alex (Izabela); as well as fifteen great-grandchildren. We rejoice in the knowledge that Henry is now with our Lord.

Henry was the final surviving member of his family. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Waldtraudt, in 2020.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the medical and support staff on the third floor of Concordia hospital for the excellent support and care they provided Henry in the final month of his life.

A celebration of Henry’s life will be held Friday, January 5th at 11:00 AM at Riverwood Church Community, 257 Riverton Avenue, with interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Viewing will be prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Concordia Foundation.
