SHEILA LORRAINE BREADY

(nee ROSTAD)

December 11, 1940 - December 23, 2023

Sheila Bready passed away on December 23, 2023 with family at her side at St. Boniface Hospital, shortly after her 83rd birthday.

She will forever be missed by her daughters, Colleen and Melanie (Steve); stepgranddaughter, Madison and her beloved cat, Tosca. She is predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Anne Rostad (nee Koshowski); brothers, Barry Rostad and Garry Rostad; stepmother, Eileen Rostad (nee Davies) and husband, Allan Bready.

Sheila was born in St. Boniface and raised in St. Vital. After losing her mother to pancreatic cancer when she was 11 years old, her father later married Eileen, forming a blended family with siblings, Charmaine, Suzanne, Charles, Ron and Yvonne.

Sheila graduated from Glenlawn Collegiate in 1958. A bright and civic-minded student, she served as president of the student council and was also a member of the Winnipeg inter-high school council.

As a young adult, Sheila worked and volunteered in a variety of fields and shared many fond memories helping young patients at Children’s Hospital and time spent with Air Force Reserve pals in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

A gift for writing was recognized early on, having won awards while still in high school including first place from the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association for an essay she wrote on the weekly press in Canada. These skills, a natural curiosity and avid interest in current affairs would later serve her well in the early 1970s as a staff writer for the Winnipeg Free Press and the St. Vital Lance. She was also a member of the Newspapers Guild at that time.

When youngest daughter, Colleen, was born she stepped away from journalism to stay home with her very active children. She poured lots of love into sewing all of Melanie’s Irish and tap dance costumes and Colleen’s rhythmic gymnastics competition suits. After raising her daughters with husband, Allan, she returned to school, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993 from the University of Winnipeg. Over the years, she was involved in a number of volunteer initiatives including the Winnipeg Police Service Victim Services Unit in the 1990s.

Sheila was a voracious reader, devouring everything from the classics to the latest novels written by journalists, broadcasters and politicians. Passionate about the arts, Sheila had season tickets to the Manitoba Theatre Centre for several years. She especially loved classical music and enjoyed many Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Manitoba Opera performances at Centennial Concert Hall.

In later years, she took numerous day trips throughout the province and enjoyed her lunches with the ladies through Creative Retirement and the MSOS. Until her final days, she often shared with her daughters the latest news, health, food and entertainment stories that would come across her newsfeed.

Sheila was a loving mother and wife and the kindest person you could know. As she was a compassionate animal lover, in lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre, Winnipeg Pet Rescue Centre and the Manitoba Animal Alliance.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to all the medical professionals who looked after her in the final days. A special mention must be made to St. Boniface Hospital’s intensive care unit’s Drs. Ben Fultz and Alex Sharp, nurses Harry and Viviane and charge nurse, Kim who all treated Sheila with great care for which her family will always be grateful.

In keeping with Sheila’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service. A private Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Interment will take place in the late spring.
