PETER WILLIAM COONEY

July 26, 1946 - January 18, 2024

Peter's jokes, logic, knowledge of freshwater fishing and love of dogs - especially golden retrievers - will be missed by his wife Joan Rogers, nephew Kevin Ellis and family, niece Chris Andersen and family, in-laws and families, and dear friends from Winnipeg, Minaki, the Metropole, First United and beyond.

Peter was an award winning accounting instructor. Former students from the Universities of Manitoba, Winnipeg and Brandon, as well as several accounting bodies, will remember his dedication and lively approach to teaching.

His generosity of spirit and ability to focus on the positive brightened others' days and brought joy to those who loved him dearly.

Peter's life will be celebrated at First United Church, 347 Richmond Road, Ottawa, on Friday, February 2, at 2:00 p.m.

Should you choose to donate in Peter's memory, an e-transfer can be sent to treasurer@firstunitedchurchottawa.org for the Westboro Region Food Bank.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I started teaching at the University of Winnipeg in Fall 1993. Peter immediately took me under his wing and taught me lessons on pedagogy that I practice to this day...some 32 years later. Perhaps the most powerful lesson he taught me was by example and it was about teaching and about so much more: the lesson was to treat everyone with kindness. I remember our lunches in the UW faculty dining area and I remember his jokes. I'm laughing now as I remember one of them...one that relate to others to this day. Thank you, Peter...thank you for all that you did for me, for our then fledgling Administrative Studies Program, and for countless students over the decades. - Posted by: Ashwin Joshi (Colleague at the University of Winnipeg) on: Jul 05, 2025

  • Hi Joan, So sorry to hear of Peter's passing - a very sad loss. My condolences. Thinking of you in this difficult time. As you are aware I knew Peter from our university days - so long ago now. I think fondly of the dinners that you, Diane and I had in our Winnipeg days. - Posted by: Louise Adams (friend) on: Jan 28, 2024

  • I only knew Peter for a relatively short time but he was a tremendous support and friend while I was navigating my way recovering from prostate surgery 26 years ago! I had a lot of respect for him! May he rest in peace! - Posted by: Camille Dessureault (Friend) on: Jan 27, 2024

  • We, fondly remember, Peter, from our days on Vernon Rd. He & Joan were so generous of their time & talents as members of Dugald United Church. Sincere condolences to you, Joan. Sharon & Carl. - Posted by: Sharon o’Shanghnessy (Freinds & neighbours ) on: Jan 27, 2024
