JUDITH ANNE MCGIBBON

Judy left us to take a walk with God on January 23, 2024 in her 101th year. Judy was a Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Friend.

Judy was predeceased by her husband, Bob and is survived by four children, Maureen, Margo (Ron), Joan, Greg (Darlene); nine grandchildren, Laura, Jenny, Lyndsey, Graeme, Matthew, Alana, Shannon, Katie, Connor. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren.

Mom’s family immigrated to Canada in 1919 and Mom was born in Austin, MB December 4, 1923. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1926. Mom had two brothers and six sisters, and they predeceased her. Mom completed her studies at St. Mary’s Academy where all six sisters graduated from SMA. Judy began her work career during the Second World War at Gillis & Warren. After a few years, Mom married her sweetheart Robert McGibbon who had recently returned from serving in the Second World War. They were married on November 30, 1946, at Holy Cross Church. Bob returned to Canada as a war amputee and his association with War Amps Canada defined and shaped Bob and Judy for the remainder of their lives.

Judy’s long association with the St. Thomas Moore Parish in Norwood led her to a very active church life which included membership with the Catholic Woman’s League. She, also, was an active choir member at weekly mass and spent countless hours volunteering. Being a very vibrant and social type of person, Judy helped create a weekly prayer group with some parishioners.

Maureen, Margo, Joan, and Greg felt fortunate to have a family cottage at Star Lake. The cottage was built in 1950 and we all thought lake life was the best!

Bob passed away in 1995 and mom began a single life. She was always “busy”. At one point mom had nine friends that needed a visit. She made sure she visited each one every month for as long as she could.

July, 2016, mom entered Misericordia Heath Centre and in February, 2017 mom moved to Misericordia Place. The staff let us know how much they enjoyed mom being part of the Misericordia Place family. Thanks to Misericordia Place. We consider our lives richer for having met staff and residents over the duration of Mom’s stay.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to War Amputations of Canada. Mom was a supporter of people struggling, please bring a pair of warm socks to donate to Siloam Mission.

A celebration of her life will take place Friday, February 16, 2024 at 10:00 a.m., Misericordia Place, 44 Furby Street. Monseigneur Comeault will be officiating.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I too went to SMA and served on its Alumnae council with Judy in the 1960s. Two of her sisters, Sr. Judith Anne and Sr. Margurita Mary taught me at SMA. In the 1960s I worked for Judy's beloved Bob for Revenue Canada. Judy was a dream to volunteer with and cared for all she encountered. Her thoughtful common sense got things done! May she rest in peace her work here done! She now can cheer all her offspring and friends on from her 'perch in paradise'. 🙏🙏 - Posted by: Chris Butterill (Friend of long ago!) on: Feb 03, 2024
