DIANE MAY HINDS

(nee BROATCH)

On January 27, 2024, we suddenly lost our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She died peacefully with Mel at her side. Diane was born on September 1, 1933, to Jim and Violet Broatch. She was predeceased by husband, her parents and her brothers, Bruce and Ralph.

She is survived by her brothers, Wayne and Jim, her sons, Russel (Debbie), Gerry (CariAnn), Shelley (Ray), and Melodee, her grandchildren, Stephanie (Steve), Stacey (Gavin), Kelsey (Kody), Tracey (Ryan), Jason (Colleen), Rashell (John), Cory (Patricia) and precious Ainslie, 20 great-grandchildren, many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Diane grew up in St. James and in 1951 married Reid. They lived on Sackville Street and raised their four children. In 1965 they moved to Montreal but returned with Mel in 1975 to be close to their married children. The last number of years were spent at Lions Place and Manor where she was awarded many volunteer awards. She lost Reid in the fall and missed him terribly. They are together again.

Thank you to the staff at Lions and Health Sciences Centre for their excellent care. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Humane Society would be appreciated.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. February 22 at Chapel Lawn and a Celebration of Life this summer.

  • Good Day: I honestly do not know what to say or how to say it. I am shocked to learn of this today. When I was a boy growing up in St. James, my birth mother (now passed on 50 years) became to know Mrs. Diane Hinds and Reid. My mother and Diane worked at A&W on Ellice and Roseberry (I think) along with Mrs. Broatch...as we were young kids, we ended up refering to Diane as Aunti Diane and Uncle Reid...She was the godmother to one of us kids....and we pretty much grew up together in St. James....so it was either spending time on Sackville or on Rutland with Grandma and Grandpa Broatch....ultimately, we all ended up in Winnipeg Beach or Matlock at the cottage...and swimming, and swimming...bbq'ing, etc....and getting sunburned..and in 1974 my mother passed on....and the following year, I joined the Canadian Forces Air Reserve and shifted to the Navy. During 1976 we learned of Ralph (James) Broatch passing away....I had returned from duty in Esquimalt and thus, we attended the funeral of Ralph...and it is of policy in the CF, when a hurse passed by and a member is in the CF Uniform, to properly pay the respect and salute the funeral proceeding. And today, I learned of Aunti Diane passing of last year....my heart goes out to all semi-relatives, of some who I do not know, but of the ones I salute most are: Russ, Jerry, Shelly, and Melodie...Aunt Diane is in a better place free from pain, but in the hands of God...may she Rest In Peace...Per Ardua Ad Astra.....
