KIM CAMPBELL

1953 - 2024

February 7, 2024, Kim Campbell, 70, loving husband, father and grandfather, unexpectedly passed after spending the day with his family. Born February 16, 1953, in Indian Head, Saskatchewan to Brian and Kay Campbell. He was the fourth of six sons.

Kim grew up in Thompson, Manitoba where he met Barbara Campbell (Sparrow). Married July 28, 1984, they moved with their family from Thompson to Winnipeg in 1988.

Kim and his brother Roland passionately operated the business Campbell North ('78), an equipment rental and supply business. The business was started in Thompson and expanded to Winnipeg. Through continual growth, operations spread to Western Canada, Northwestern Ontario, and Nunavut.

Upon his successful exit from the company, he transitioned from a full-time business owner and entrepreneur to a full-time dad and volunteer. Kim was involved in all aspects of his family's lives; especially Manitoba Alpine and Highland Dance. He also volunteered for Canadian Diabetes, Canadian Cancer Society, and many other community organizations. If there was a need, he was there to help.

Kim loved to travel. Kim and Barb travelled extensively visiting all seven continents, often travelling "the road less travelled". Kim loved a road-trip and with his family, they took many.

Kim instilled in his family a love of the North and respect for the people living there. Together they spent over 30 summers at Setting Lake. Recent years were spent at Lake of the Woods.

Kim loved skiing. He met Barb at the Thompson ski hill. Kim celebrated his 70th birthday skiing with family and friends in Kimberly, BC. Skiing is an integral part of the Campbell family.

Arizona became their winter home in later years. Time was spent golfing, hiking, and making new friends.

Kim is survived by his wife, Barb, son Sean (Sarah Dobie), daughters, Kalee (Scott Arnould), Tara (Adam Klaponski), and granddaughters, Eloise and Vivienne; his brothers, Colin (Judy), Matt (Melanie), and Roland (Lindsey), mother-in-law Leone Sparrow, brother-in-law Jim Sparrow (Mary), sister-in-law Janice Leslie (David), and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Brian and Kay Campbell, and his brothers, Sean (1984) and Vincent (2020).

Kim was a legendary human being. Loyal, quiet, introspective, and kind beyond words. His brothers, their families, Barb's family, and his friends were greatly important to him. He is, and will continue to be, greatly missed.

Our calm family leader is on a new adventure. He loved adventures.

A Celebration of Life will be held February 23, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Breezy Bend Golf and Country Club, 7620 Roblin Blvd., Headingley, MB.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation and Diabetes Canada would be appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (40 entries)

  • My sincere condolences Barb to you and your family. I remember fondly our chats at Strategym pre or post workout. When winter ski season starts here in Kelowna I often think of you and Kim remembering your love of skiing at the slopes nearby. Thinking of you and your family at this difficult time. - Posted by: Kathryn Hatcher (Friend) on: Mar 02, 2024

  • It was sad to hear of Kim’s passing. I worked for Kim and his Dad Brian at Campbell North from about 1977 to 83, both on the counter looking after Liquid Air products and the equipment and parts needs for the fellows mainly from Inco. It was a pleasure working for both father and son. - Posted by: Lawanna Moffatt (Employee) on: Feb 26, 2024

  • I have many good memories of playing and hanging out with Kim as children in the north. My condolences to his wife and family, who must be missing him greatly. - Posted by: David Henderson (friend) on: Feb 23, 2024

  • My deepest condolences to you Barb and to all the family. There aren't enough words to express how Kim lighted up a room with his gentle, kind presence and that big smile. I will miss our visits. He was an inspiring human being. Much love to you all, Dona Watts-Hutchings - Posted by: Dona Watts-Hutchings (Professional and a friend) on: Feb 23, 2024

  • I am so sorry to the Campbell Family for this loss. My parents and I thought a lot of Kim in getting to know him and the family when they moved on to the street. Kim's quiet demeaner, reinforced the idiom that still waters run deep. Consistency is the only word I can think of to describe the relationship that he had with myself and my parents. He consistently would wave or walk over when he saw myself or family members driving past their home. If we were out in the yard, he would always come over and check in with a kind word. Recent conversations with Kim, circled around highway 6 road conditions, how my trip was on Highway 6 or asking about my snow tire situation. His soft spot for Thompson always showed in these conversations and I always felt a special connection to living and working in Thompson in knowing Kim. I have many good memories from our trip to Florida together and all of the kindness over the years. His presence will be missed on our street. Hugs to all of you. I know how hard it is to lose such an integral fixture of your family. Much love and sympathy, Christa - Posted by: Christa Dubesky (Friend of the family and Neighbour) on: Feb 23, 2024

  • You cannot grow up in Thompson and not know the "Campbell family". Kim was always the quiet leader and helper. Condolences to Barb and extended family. - Posted by: Bev Watson (aquaintance) on: Feb 23, 2024

  • To Kim's family and friends; I am very sorry to learn of his passing. I got to know him and some of his family at MB Alpine Skiing. What a super person and fabulous volunteer! At events, he was always first on the hill, a d last off, no matter the weather, or what he was working at. Always happy to be there, happy to help- a truly inspiring person! Anyone who met him or worked with hi are very lucky, indeed. For the family, my very sincere condolences, my thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Dave McKnight (fellow ski racing enthusiast) on: Feb 22, 2024

  • Kim was truly one of those rare individuals you encounter only a handful of times in life. While the exact moment of our first meeting escapes me, the memories of our time together at Asessippi remain vivid. His kindness and warmth always shone through, especially during our shared suppers, when our conversations delved into the meaningful. As time passed, my visits to Asessippi stopped, yet our paths continued to cross sporadically. Whether it was at West Hawk Lake or The Forks, whether sharing coffee with our wives or simply catching up at each other's homes, Kim and Barb became integral parts of our lives. Their presence was so significant that they stood by us during our Canadian Citizen Ceremony, a testament to the bond we shared. The absence of Kim is a weight too heavy to bear, not just for myself, but for my wife well. We mourn his loss deeply, holding onto cherished memories as we navigate this difficult reality. Kim will forever remain in our hearts, his spirit a beacon of light in the darkness of our grief. - Posted by: Henry Soto & Elena Napoles (Friends) on: Feb 21, 2024

  • We were so very, very sorry to hear of the sudden passing of your dear Kim. Our heartfelt condolences to you, Barb, and Kim's entire family. We remember Kim as generous, calm and helpful, deeply involved in the activities of his family and always willing to help out wherever he could. We are so glad he was able to spend his retirement years doing the things he loved. - Posted by: Judy and Luke deLange (friend) on: Feb 21, 2024

  • Kim was in my first grade 11 class in 1969. He was a quiet student but definitely a contributor to our discussions. My condolences Barb to you and your family. His passing brings back so many memories from my first years in the north. Rest in peace, Kim. - Posted by: MaryLynn Safronetz (Teacher RDPC) on: Feb 21, 2024

  • To all of the Campbell family, My condolences on Kim's passing. He and I worked at many ski races around Manitoba, as he continued to volunteer long after finished racing, to help promote and grow the sport. Anyone who had the good fortune of talking with Kim benefitted from his kindness, good spirit, powerful wit, and leadership by example towards being a better person. - Posted by: Joe Healey (Fellow volunteer) on: Feb 19, 2024

  • As a minister, I guess you're not supposed to have favourites, but Kim was one of mine. He was a quiet, kind and generous man who supplied me with equipment and advice with a few of my home projects. He was a quiet, unobtrusive man, and yet seemed to fill a room with his quiet demeanour, his smile, and his patience. He was a good father, husband and, I suspect, a loyal friend to many people. I am grateful for his life and I pray that his family is blessed with many happy memories. - Posted by: Colin (Minister ) on: Feb 18, 2024

  • Deeply saddened by the loss of Kim. Kim was not just a family friend, but a big part of ski race days, while on the Thompson Ski Team in the 70's. Kim patiently taught me how to wax and file my skis on race days, possibly made a difference between placing 3rd or 4th! Kim will be missed by many, my deepest condolences to Barb and family. - Posted by: Jill Zonneveld (Friend) on: Feb 17, 2024

  • Barb & Family, Cheryl & I are so sorry to hear of Kim's passing. We have so many fond memories of the years involved with the Highland Dancing Community with yours and our daughters. Equipment and staging set up and take down and standing together at the back of the hall with the other "Dancing" dads during the many Competitions. Lots of smiles and good times. Supplying scissor lifts for setting up the "Pavilion of Scotland" and countless hours working at Scot dance Canada Championships here in 2004. His work was appreciated beyond words. He was a kind and gentle man who we are glad to have known. Thinking of you. - Posted by: Cheryl & Allen Nixon (Friends) on: Feb 13, 2024

  • We were saddened and shocked to hear of Kim's passing. Our condolences to Barb, Sean, Kalee, Tara, and Roland. We were blessed to meet the Campbell family through the Summit Ski Club. Our kids were the same age and grew up together through the Manitoba ski racing community. Kim was a real gentleman and I had the privilege to work with Kim officiating many ski races throughout the years. We also had the best of time skiing with the Campbells in Big White at Spring Break and fondly remember a week long visit to the cabin at Setting Lake where Kim taught me the proper way to fillet a pickerel. Unfortunately, I haven't caught enough fish since to perfect the technique but I learned from a master. We feel blessed to have bumped into Kim and Barb some months ago at Costco where we caught up in everything going on in our kid's lives. The world lost a kind, generous and caring soul. - Posted by: Gord & Jane Masters (Friends) on: Feb 13, 2024

  • Isabelle and I were so deeply saddened to hear Kim had passed. He was a great friend, and I've known him for over 40 years! It was Kim and Bob MacKay who got me so passionate about skiing, when they took me skiing the back country at Lake Louise on my first time on skis! Since then skiing has been a wonderful part of my life! Kim was always there as a friend and we shared many happy times together! We thought we'd have many years yet to ski with Kim and Barb at Kimberley! We will miss him enormously. We will always remember him with smiles and tears! RIP Kim. • I knew Kim as a neighbour for many years in Thompson. Over the years when we would meet his smile would light a room. When we were Air Cadets we spent one Christmas vacation sleeping on a school floor in Pikwitonei to show movies to the local children at night and shoot chickens by day. My deepest sympathy to Kim's family. - Posted by: Mike Rutherford (friend) on: Feb 10, 2024

  • We offer our heart felt condolences on the passing of Kim, a good friend and neighbor at the lake. It was with shock when we heard that Kim was not well and great shock that we heard that Kim past away so quickly. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Barb and your family. May the many wonderful memories created over the years help you during this difficult time. We always enjoyed his and your company, at dinners or visits before your walks at the lake. We enjoyed discussing politics and the Winnipeg Jets. Kim was a friend and a true gentlemen. Although no words of sympathy can ease the loss you and your family bare, please find some comfort in the thought that others care. We are sorry for the loss of Kim. • We skied with Kim & Barb last year in Kimberley when he celebrated his 70th birthday. We were hoping to do that again next month. His family was instrumental in the Thompson Ski Club & Mystery Mt. Many good stories to tell. Will have numerous photos of them in my history of Thompson Ski Club. Want to finish that this year. Our sincere and deepest condolences to the family. It’s a very sad day! - Posted by: Volker & Marsha Beckmann (Friend & fellow skiers) on: Feb 10, 2024

  • I am very sorry to hear of Kim’s passing. I lost touch with Kim and others after 1974 but heard news from his friends, Ron and Al and through other friends. All I can offer is that when a friend is a friend from school; whether or not you kept in touch, they are always there in your heart and mind. My deepest condolences to his family and close friends. - Posted by: NancyBremner nee Clarke (Friend) on: Feb 10, 2024

  • This makes us all very sad. We are shocked by the news and offer our deepest condolences to the whole family. We moved here over 30 years ago and got to meet everyone at the school bus stop. We watched everyone grow up! Always loved running into you as you were out for another walk. Kim was an awesome man and it was an honor to have known him and we will miss waving hello to him. Hugs to everyone..... - Posted by: The Sellners (Neighbor) on: Feb 10, 2024

  • Condolences to Kim's family- especially Colin, Matt and Roland- our families were long standing friends growing up in Thompson in the early days. Kim was a year younger than me and great friends of my brothers David and Robin - going on "adventures" in the bush- including building a tepee- like tree fort in the bush behind Riverside Dr. I remember Kim as an Air Cadet - his Dad Brian was CO and when he became Mayor my Dad took over- all the Campbell boys were in Air Cadets. And I remember Kim being at Simonhouse Presbyterian Summer Camp in 1965cwith me - we were to return home on the train and had to "walk the plank " on the road spur to Wekusko as the bridge was being taken down and rebuilt- Kim literally ran across that plank. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Susan Wilding (Friend) on: Feb 10, 2024

  • Dear Barb and kids it is with sympathy that I write this. I remember meeting you all years ago and the kids coming to play with the duPlessix boys and babysitting Tara. • Hello Barb & family. I had the pleasure of meeting Kim in Thompson in 1969 - 70 when I worked with Ilford Riverton Airways. I worked in Thompson & he and Ron McLeod worked in Ilford but we connected whenever we were able to get together. I will always remember him as being the “gentle giant” as he was much bigger than me & way bigger than Ron. As I followed Kim’s life vicariously through Ron I was always glad to hear how you all were doing. It was very sad to hear of his death and my condolences & prayers are in my heart for you. - Posted by: Alan Capyk (Old friend) on: Feb 10, 2024
