KAREN PURSAGA
With heavy hearts, we would like to share the recent passing of Karen Pursaga (nee Funk).
Karen was born on October 30, 1952. She grew up in Winnipeg with three siblings: twin sister Sharon and two brothers, Nelson and Wayne. At 20 years old, Karen married Alex and together they had four children: Janine (Chris), Joy (Brydon), Justin (Chantal) and Jared (Katelyn). Alongside "Papa" Alex, she later became a proud Nana to Kaden, Zolie, Ben, Lucas, Annabelle, Cohen and Max.
She was a classroom teacher of grades 2, 3, and 4 for 35 years in the Louis Riel School Division (formerly the St. Boniface School Division). Teaching was very dear to her heart.
After Karen retired from teaching, she settled enthusiastically into her new title of Nana to her grandchildren. Nothing thrilled her more than to spend time with them and to share in their milestones, achievements and passions.
Karen was a proud member of her church and had a deep love of her God and faith, which she strived to share with her family and friends. Ultimately, Karen hopes all her family and friends will join her in heaven.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children's Hospital Foundation.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Karen's honour at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 1, at Winnipeg Evangelical Free Church, 500 Lagimodiere Blvd.

Deepest sympathy on Karen’s sudden passing to all her family. I knew Karen through our teaching careers and took a university course with her. She was a dedicated teacher who worked hard to ensure her students were learning. She talked often about her children and grandchildren. It was evident how proud she was of them. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Josie Landry (Teaching colleague) on: Mar 01, 2024

I am so sorry to hear of Karen's passing. She was such a wonderful human being. She excelled as a teacher and was loved by one and all when my sons were at Shamrock School. One day my oldest son had a playdate with Janine, Karen's oldest... I was mortified when my exuberant son picked by the Fisher Price record player and threw it at Janine. Karen was more than gracious about the incident... amazing kind person. What a huge loss to her family and grandchildren. Her care and love will live forever in the hearts of her family members and all the students that were privileged to have her as their teacher. - Posted by: Verna Adolf (Friend and parent to students that Karen taught...) on: Feb 24, 2024

Karen Pursaga was a remarkable English teacher for our 2 older children (Jon and Nicole) in Shamrock School. They fondly recall how brilliantly Mrs. Pursaga instilled a love of reading in the kids. Our youngest Michael, remembers her dedication in Christian service, hosting Discovery program at Island Lake Elementary school. She cared deeply for her young charges. We recently reconnected with Karen and she was always a joy to be with. Such a proud Nana who loved her children and grandchildren immensely. Our deepest condolences and prayers for Karen’s family at this difficult time. - Posted by: Meng & David Tan (Friends) on: Feb 24, 2024

We remember as if it was yesterday meeting the Pursaga family at the Niakwa Travelodge some 35 years ago. Each of our families had gone there for brunch after church. We invited Janine & Joyanne over for a play date with our girls. It was the beginning of a life long friendship for our daughters 🙂 Karen was a wonderful person who will be sadly missed. We hope that God blesses all of her family with strength, peace, comfort & fond memories. Blessings & love, Ernie & Barb. - Posted by: Barb & Ernie Ryz (Friends ) on: Feb 24, 2024
