It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Matthew John Loewen, beloved son of Gail and John, brother to Kate (Derek), Mark (Callan), and Nick, cherished partner to Leah, and uncle to Walter, Gordie, Cece and Lawrence, passed peacefully at his home on the 19th of February, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, teamwork and love amongst all who knew him.
Matt, born in Toronto on August 15th 1984, was determined from the start. He excelled in academics, with a passion for mathematics and athletics. He was a devoted teammate with unique talent on the basketball court.
He graduated from Red River College with a diploma in finance where he led as a power forward with the Red River Rebels Basketball team. During his playing time in college he helped lead the team to championships in 2012, winning the tournament Most Valuable Player.
He poured his energy into his work with over 19 years at Payworks, where he was known as a tower of kindness and support. Matt was a true leader, always taking the time to teach others with compassion. He took charge spearheading intramural sports teams ping pong brackets and being the resident prank ambassador.
Matt will be remembered for his gentle heart, touching countless lives with his kindness, effort and grounded passion. He was adored by those around him and leaves behind a treasure trove of memories and laughs that will forever be cherished by his family, friends and colleagues.
A celebration of Matthew’s life will be held on Friday, March 1, 2024 at 1:00 p.m., in the Pinnacle Room at the Blue Bomber Football Stadium. All are welcome. Please enter at Gate 1. Matt would be honoured if you wear your favourite sports jersey.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Matthew’s honour to the United Way or Harvest Manitoba.

Matt will always be remembered with fondness and joy. I hope the Loewen family can take comfort in knowing he was a special man who found a place in the heart of everyone who knew him.
