It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Syl on February 18, 2024 at the age of 92.
Syl was predeceased by his loving wife Edie of 63 years in 2016. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Jeff, Sandy (Maurice), Robert; grandchildren, Maxwell and Samuel and great-grandson Mason. He is survived by his sister Rose.
Syl was born the twelfth child of fifteen in St. Georges, MB to his parents, Philorum and Marie Anna. His early years were marked by resilience and sacrifice, his education cut short having to work in the lumber camp during harsh winters and for a building mover in summers to help support his family.
Syl married Edie in 1953. By 1955, two days before the birth of his first child, he secured steady employment with Shea Brewery which later became Labatt Brewing Company. While working for the brewery, he continued to better himself and went to night school and years later took an engineering course leading to several promotions throughout his career. He retired, a young pensioner, as Plant Engineer from Labatts in 1987 after 32 years. He continued to do some consulting work and then moved to Lac Du Bonnet on the Winnipeg River. He and Edie were fortunate enough to spend many years there in the summers and vacationing in Florida and then Phoenix in the winters where they made many life-long friends. He loved to go on cruises and together they took many visiting different places.
Dad seemed to enjoy work as much as he did his vacationing. He always gave tirelessly and effortlessly of his time and know-how to help anyone who asked, particularly his children. Dad valiantly took care of Mom through her battle with cancer. He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed. Dad gave generously to many charities so to honour Syl’s memory please consider donating to your favourite charity.
A private family ceremony has taken place.
