LOUIS SAURETTE

March 9, 1936 - February 24, 2024

Louis Saurette, husband, dad, pepère, and brother, passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre, after a very short illness.

Following a very successful career as a farmer, Louis and Jeannine spent 30 years of retirement travelling, dancing, attending country music concerts, and touring various US and Canadian destinations, in three different motorhomes. Louis is now exploring new locations in heaven. He would have celebrated his 88th birthday on March 9.

Louis was born in Aubigny, MB and predeceased by his parents, Edmond and Cécile; brother Ronald; sisters, Jeannine and Irène; brothers-in-law, George, Lionel and Gary. Louis leaves to mourn his wife Jeannine, brother Claude (Raymonde), sisters, Yolande, Denise, Pauline, and sister-In-law Yvette, along with numerous nieces and nephews. On his wife Jeannine’s side of the family, Louis was predeceased by his father and mother-in-law Mathieu and Antoinette Lemoine; in-laws, Angèle and Omer Carriere; Ronald and Jacqueline Lemoine; René and Gisèle Lemoine; Gilles Lemoine and Richard Nolette. Louis is survived by his sister-in-law Louise Nolette along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Louis married the love of his life in summer of 1957. He met Jeannine in Ste. Agathe while offering to tie her skates. One of his many famous lines was, “When I want something, I go get it”, and he did just that with Jeannine. Their marriage of 66 years was full, admirable and endured a variety of challenges which they overcame by never compromising the respect and love that they had for each other. Louis created many great gifts and memories which will live on through the stories shared by their three sons: Robert (Jackie), Guy (Lorraine), René (Olivia); six grandchildren: Kevin (Sarah), Lisa (Bryan), Bobbi-Jean (Richard), Colin, Nicholas (Marika) and Mia; five great-grandchildren: Sophie, Molly, Ayden, Zoe, and Faustina.

Louis was a farmer and astute businessman. He never took “No” for an answer and was always looking into the future when making decisions. He built a brand-new home in 1965, at a time when money was not in abundance. This was followed by a huge machine shop in 1966. He spoke with great pride on how he built, added on to and ultimately paid for the family farm, which remained the family homestead for 52 years. Another of Louis’ favourite lines was, “Do it once, Do it Right”, which he lived by for his entire life.

In 2018, Louis and Jeannine moved to Winnipeg and had great pride in their condo at The Waterfront. This move allowed them to downsize and enjoy more time with friends and family, visiting, playing cards and shuffling. It also gave Louis more time to go back to the country and meet up with his friends at “Jake Horton’s” in Rosenort, jaunts to Morris, or touring around Aubigny to see how the crops were doing.

Louis enjoyed travelling, and could name all the places they had been to, including the highways they took, and the places they stayed at along the way. His memory, and attention to detail, were exceptional. His travels took them to Hawaii, Australia, Yukon, Europe, Mexico, most US states, a number of Caribbean cruises, and of course many Canadian cities and Provinces.

Louis was a very generous man, not only supporting his family with their various endeavours, but also to those in need. When running his various errands, Louis would buy a coffee or burger and offer it to someone in need. He was also a supporter of L’Arche Winnipeg, Centre Flavie-Laurent and the Movement Centre of Manitoba. Louis and Jeannine also established an Endowment Fund through the Winnipeg Foundation, which will offer sustainable funding for The Movement Centre of Manitoba, indefinitely.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital Emergency Ward, and Ward E4, for all their compassion and care. We would also like to thank Riverview Health Centre’s Palliative Care team. Dad could not say enough about how comfortable the team made it for him. You are all so special, and our family is very grateful for the wonderful work you do.

A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Timothy’s Church, 135 John Forsyth Rd. in Winnipeg. A private family interment will follow later in the afternoon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Louis Saurette to Movement Centre of Manitoba - Louis and Jeannine Saurette Family Fund held at The Winnipeg Foundation, 1350 One Lombard Place, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0X3. Tel 204-944-9474. www.wpgfdn.org
