DR. E. ALLAN HAWKINS
Please join us in celebrating the life of Dr. E. Allan Hawkins who passed peacefully at the age of 88. A celebration of Allan's life will take place on Friday, May 10, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Road United Church.
Allan's journey began in St. Vital, where he grew up as the eldest of five children. There he met and married his love and wife of 56 years, Beverly. Following the birth of their first child, Allan forged his future returning to school to pursue his Doctor of Chiropractic at the Canadian Chiropractic College in Toronto. Graduating in 1965, he embarked on a career he loved, establishing practices in Thompson, Winnipeg, Beausejour, and East Kildonan. He continued to serve his community in retirement with practices in Rosa and Minnedosa. Allan's dedication to his profession was evident through his service as president of the Manitoba Chiropractic Association and as a founding member and chairman of the Canadian Chiropractic Research Association.
As the patriarch of his family, Allan provided unwavering support and with Bev hosted many a family gathering and Sunday dinner. He was also a loyal friend, mentor, Rotarian, and Blue Bomber fan. He enjoyed the cottage, the houseboat, travel and many friendships. Eventually Bev and Al settled in Vancouver, BC, near family. In his last few years, he received kind and compassionate care at Rosemary Heights Seniors Centre.
Allan was predeceased by his wife in 2016. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Gary (Debbie), Jane (John), Jack (Barb), Jill, Jim and Joe (Karyn), his 17 grandchildren: Tamra, Chad, Chayse, Chet, Colin (Nicole), Andrea (Scott), Alison, Heather (Robert), Michael, Mackenzie, Lexy, Oliver, Zach, Elijah, Caden, Grace and Isla; and eight great-grandchildren: Jeremy, Kyle, Lucas, Emma, Alyssa, Cierra, Clive and Scottie.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Allan's memory to the Canadian Chiropractic Research Association.

I remember getting in a car accident teaching in Fisher River in 1996. For the next several weeks I would come in on the Friday night, go see Dr. Hawkins first thing Saturday morning, and then hightail it back out to Fisher River to ref hockey at noon. I remain certain to this day that Dr. Hawkins didn't have any other patients on at least some of those Saturdays. But he knew how messed up my neck and back were and was there each and every week. Dr. Hawkins always felt like family to me, as did Joe. I remember the last time I saw him in 2007. He was moving more slowly, but he had the same presence, the same warmth that just emanated from him. He loved to laugh during my appointments, and I genuinely loved being his patient. He was a truly exceptional human being. - Posted by: Mike Okrainec (Patient) on: Aug 24, 2024

Dr Hawkins was my family's chiropractor in the 1980's. Dr. Hawkins always had a special place in my heart as he was the one who found my dad's bone cancer in his back. My dad was getting adjustments which led to some x-rays and right away Dr. Hawkins arranged for us to meet someone at Seven Oaks Hospital. I'm glad that Dr. Hawkins found this out so treatment could start immediately for my dad. Also Dr. Hawkins adjustments saved my then boyfriend, now husband from getting surgery. We owe so much to Dr. Hawkins and his expertise. I also remember Dr. Hawkins jokes, big stature and him smoking his pipe. Forever grateful to him for all the care he gave my family. Dr. Hawkins is what the kids call an “OG”. He was a very strong advocate for natural health, chiropractor work, and drug-free therapy. He was a pioneer in creating a chiropractic community in Winnipeg. Every session with him was a lesson in health—it often included a funny story or even a naughty joke as well. He knew the healing power of laughter. I am so very grateful to have had the opportunity to be in his chiropractic care during my youth, teens, and twenties. He was a pro at dealing with my “loose ball bearings” lol. Dr. Hawkins treated three generations within my family—he and my parents became friends. Later, after Dr. Hawkins “retired” to Rosa, Dr. Joe and I became friends, and he and my husband and I have had many a long conversation about all of our favoured “hot topics”. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Joe and his family, both immediate and extended. If there is a Heaven is as vast and amazing as is written, then I am willing to bet Dr. Al has found a nice little spot to hang out with friends like my dad and he is sharing naughty jokes and stories galore. Thank you Dr. Al for the gift of health. - Posted by: Linda Guest (Patient) on: Apr 19, 2024

My deepest condolences to the whole family and relatives. Allan was always cordial, curtious and in my view a good looking man. I certainly remember him at family gatherings when visiting Winnipeg, and inparticular at his parents place in St. Vital. Always pleasant, as was his wife, Bev. You will be remembered fondly, Alan. May you be resting in peace. - Posted by: Mary Hawkins (Cousin) on: Apr 04, 2024

My sincere condolences to Allan's extended family of 3 generations. As his cousin from Ottawa, both he and his wife Beverley (D) were generous with their hospitality throughout life. One of my fondest memories was our fun on their docked boat at Kenora Ontario. Later in life I was lucky to be able to visit him also in Vancouver. Wish I could have lived closer. Thanks Allan. - Posted by: Sandra Hawkins (Cousin) on: Mar 31, 2024

My sincere condolences to Dr. Hawkins family and friends. Dr. Hawkins was our first Chiropractor experience that we immediately got to trust. Going to his office was actually fun, First he told you a joke and then you got adjusted. We were very sorry when he retired and we had move on, We stayed with his office and have gone through a few Chiros. We really missed him and never found another Chiropractor that started with a joke first and adjustment later. R.I.P Dr. Hawkins you were one in a million - Posted by: Bert and Roslyn (Patient) on: Mar 30, 2024

I went to Dr. Hawkins in Thompson, Manitoba for some chiropractic treatment on my back and he took one look at me and tried to make some adjustments but he claimed he could not make any adjustments until I gained some muscle tone which I lacked, without muscle tone my back would not stay in adjustment. So after exercising and building up muscle tone I went to Dr. Hawkins again and he was able to make corrections to my back and relieve the pain. Off my student loan I had studied photography for two years at NAIT in Edmonton. On one visit he told me he was having trouble with his x-ray machine and there was no control of density on the negative. He knew about my background in photography and wanted to know what I might suggest. We had a similar problem at NAIT in the color lab where we had a density problem plus a color shift in the prints. This problem at NAIT was caused by their massive computer training program which at that time they used the old-fashioned computers that were as big as one room in size. That was back in 1966 Every time this massive computer would fire up and it would cause a voltage fluctuation enough to affect the density and the color quality of the print output from the enlarger. I told Dr. Hawkins of this experience and that I was only guessing when I said it could be you have a fluctuation in your line voltage when you use the x-ray machine. He called the power company and they discovered that line voltage to his x-ray would fluctuate enough to cause the problem of density a shift on his x-rays. To fix the problem they installed a special transformer outside his place to stabilize the output to the x-ray machine. That solved the problem. I will be 84 this July and I still rely on the care of the same chiropractor in Calgary which I have had for the past 20 years to keep me walking and pain free. - Posted by: Fred Sheppard (Former patient in Thompson Manitoba 1967) on: Mar 30, 2024

I was a patient of Allan's for some 20 + yrs after 2 car accidents that left me with regular back pain that he always quickly corrected when needed ... over the years he got to be more of a big brother & we even occasionally stepped out together for a quick hamburger, across the street of his practice, if I was his last visit of the day... After his retirement I really never needed regular treatment as much, but visited his retirement home in Vita, to do some plumbing repairs he needed... He was a true gentleman & good friend always... My condolences to the entire family for their loss ...May he Rest In Peace .. - Posted by: Don Palidwor (Patient / Friend) on: Mar 30, 2024

My sincere condolences to Jane and John and their extended family on the loss of their father Allan. I, and members of my family, attended Dr. Hawkins for treatment for many years. Many years back I had suffered a very serious and painful neck injury for three days and a friend suggested Dr. Hawkins. As I walked into the office, he looked at me and said "you are in serious trouble" and immediately took me in for treatment. Five minutes later, I walked out pain free. If I had a $1,000 in my pocket, I would have gladly given it to him. May God bless him. Ron Campbell. - Posted by: Ronald Campbell (Family Friend) on: Mar 30, 2024
