DR. MONTE HOWARD KOWALL

November 9, 1928 - April 17, 2024

Monte passed away peacefully at home on April 17, 2024, at the age of 95, with devoted family by his side.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of almost 68 years, Cecile (nee Pollock); children, Pamela (Gary Brooker), Paul (DD), Feryn and Sheri (Robbie Weisz); grandchildren, Alana (Matt Joudrey), Ivy, Rachel, Sarah, Lainey, Nayce and Sienna.

Monte grew up with his older brother Bernard in the North End of Winnipeg. He attended school at Machray, St. John's and the University of Manitoba where he received his medical degree. After completing specialty training in Boston, MA, he established his pediatric practice, first at the Mall Medical Clinic and then in the Boyd Building, enjoying a rewarding 45 year career. He served on staff at several hospitals and volunteered decades of service to the St. Amant Centre, Cerebral Palsy Association, Mount Carmel Clinic and in northern Manitoba at Indian Lake and Norway House. Monte and wife Cecile were very involved in their synagogue, Herzlia-Adas Yeshurun. Monte also had many hobbies. He was an avid reader, stamp collector, culinary expert, gardener and handyman. Most of all he enjoyed being with family and friends and truly enjoyed the special times with his grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews.

Monte and Cecile travelled to many destinations including Italy, Russia, Hawaii, Mexico, Dominican Republic, California and Florida. Monte really enjoyed the lake at Winnipeg Beach where he and Cecile eventually decided to reside during the summers, while wintering in Margate, Florida.

Monte enjoyed life and was blessed to have remained in his own home until his last day. He lived with dignity and humility and will always be remembered by the many patients he cared for over the years, as well as by his loving family and many friends.

Funeral services were held on April 21, 2024, at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Martin Pollock, Ethan Pollock, Jayden Pollock, Charles Morris, Liam Pollock and Harlan Morris. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to dedicated caregivers, Nelly, Eddie, Marietta, Ann, Connie and Gizelle for the kind, caring and respectful manner in which they attended to our father over the last few years.

Donations may be made to the Monte and Cecile Kowall Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba or to a charity of your choice.

  • Dr. Kowall saved my life in 1965. I was terribly ill 9 yr old that was transferred from the Mis to the Children’s Hospital. Dr. Kowall figured out my Addison’s disease before it killed me. 20 yrs later he figured out my baby girl's heart problem and saved her too with his quick action. Thankyou Dr. Kowall. I will never forget you. Paul Godard - Posted by: Paul Godard (Patient) on: Sep 24, 2024

  • Please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of this most gentle and amazing man. He was my Doctor into my 20’s and my two children’s Doctor until his retirement. There are many stories I could tell you. My son was running a very high fever one day and was rushed to St. Boniface Hospital. The attending Doctors were having difficulty with the continual seizures. I went in the room and demanded someone call my Doctor. It was minutes later and it was under control and my son was fine. The one Doctor said to me what an amazing Doctor you have. On behalf of my late Mother he helped her through many trying times with our brother at a very young age. He had the utmost patience and the most calming demeanour. He always showed such compassion. He was a Jewel and there will never be another like him. • The only reason I’m still alive today is because of Dr. Kowall, I will be 60 years old in a couple months, but as a young child I was very sick with asthma, and if it wasn’t for Dr. Kowall and Dr. C.D. Ellis and the nurses at the Misericordia Hospital I sure I wouldn’t be alive today. I often think of him and never will forget about him, waiting for him to come down the hallway at the hospital, a big man with a even bigger heart, I will always remember him and will never forget what he did for me, RIP Dr. Kowall and God bless his family. THANK YOU. - Posted by: Terry Koldon (Patient ) on: May 25, 2024

  • I have to share this story as it reflects the wonderful man he was. Dr. Kowall had looked after me from birth up to my mid 20's. I had made an appointment to see him back in the mid 90's and at that time I was in my early 20's. When I showed at the Norwood Medical Clinic and walked in his waiting area it struck me that it was kind of odd sitting there with infants and toddlers all over the place. I occasionally received looks as to why there is a grown man seeing the Pediatrician. Anyways, I was called into the office and when Dr. K walked in I said to him "Don't you think I'm getting a bit old to be coming to see you"? Without hesitation and that amazing smile on his face he responded "I WILL LET YOU KNOW AND BE THE JUDGE OF WHEN THAT HAPPENS"! Very happy to hear that I continued to see him up until he retired. As many will agree with me there will NEVER EVER be a replacement for DR. Kowall a truly great physician and man! - Posted by: Jeffrey Thompson (Former Patient) on: May 25, 2024
