It is with great sadness that the family of Alan Shaw announces his peaceful passing in Halifax, NS, after struggling with Parkinson’s for many years.
Born in Winnipeg in 1937, he was the son of the late Thomas Bryce and Alma (Crowther) Shaw. Alan had a love of sports and music, participating in hockey at Bourkevale Community Club, high school football and curling, singing in the boys’ choir at St. James Anglican Church, and taking piano lessons from an early age. These passions continued with Alan later in life as he picked up tennis, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golf. He continued singing with various choirs in Nova Scotia, one of which was invited to perform Mozart’s Requiem along with other choirs as a mass choir at Carnegie Hall in 2001, a real highlight in Alan’s life!
Alan graduated from St. James Collegiate in 1955 as School President and Governor General’s medalist. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (Senior Stick) from University of Manitoba in 1958 and soon moved to Kapuskasing, ON to start his career with Kimberly-Clark Inc. He moved to Saint John, NB with Kimberly-Clark, where he met Willa Lanford, and they were married on April 8, 1961. In 1974, Alan became the VP of Finance for House of Hay, and he, Willa and family moved to Truro, NS. In 1978, he became the owner of Sparkling Spring Water Ltd., which he successfully managed and grew until 1991.
After selling his business, Alan settled into retirement with Willa enjoying many activities and friends in Halifax, spending winters in Naples, FL, and summers at his favourite place on the south shore of Nova Scotia, sitting on the deck looking out over the ocean and his beloved “whale rock”. Alan made many trips to Winnipeg and Calgary after Willa’s passing, and those memories and fun times are treasured.
Alan was predeceased by his wife, Willa, and is survived by his sister Audrey (Jim) Montgomery, daughter Laura Shaw (John Harrison), son Jim Shaw (Shaunna MacIsaac), six grandchildren, Gareth, Alexandra, Christopher, Lily, Parker and Brett, two great-grandchildren, Jeffery and Magnolia, niece Jodi Petch (George Moore) and grandniece, Amy Petch.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on June 22, 2024, at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Halifax. Burial will be at a later date at Camp Hill Cemetery. Donations in memory of Alan may be made to Parkinson Canada, 1-888-664-1973, or parkinson.ca
