GWYNETH DIANA (GWEN) KIRBY

January 19, 1921 - May 27 2024

Gwyneth passed away peacefully, with her family at her side. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Walter, her daughter Susan Diana, son Walter Roy as well as her four brothers, Maurice, Daniel, Richard and Glaspheryn Pugh. Gwyneth will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughters Glynis Fleming (Michael) and Deborah Kirby, brother Glyn Kirby (Lois). Also remaining who will miss her dearly are her grandchildren Madisyn, Allyson, Jessica, Jamie, Laura, Chris, Jennifer, Melissa, Julie, Sarah, Kaitlyn, Christopher, and Andrew and many great-grandchildren.

Gwyneth was born in Tonypandy, Wales to Daniel and Alice Pugh on January 19, 1921. Gwyneth was an incredibly strong-willed woman who gave everything she had to raise and provide for her family. Over the course of a 103 year lifespan, she was witness to some of the most incredible and also tragic events, many one could never imagine. She served as a nurse during the Second World War where she met her husband Walter who was fighting for his country in London.

She then moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where she married and started her family. Gwyneth enjoyed a tremendous career as a Librarian at the University of Manitoba where she rose through the ranks to take responsibility of the conversion to an automated library system, a remarkable testament to her intelligence, strength and determination. She lived in Winnipeg until 2018 when she relocated to North Vancouver, British Columbia. She enjoyed the next six years living independently at Cedar Springs Parc Retirement Home where she met and enjoyed many wonderful friends.

A private, family Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.

Family and friends are asked to please take a few moments to remember and celebrate her incredible life journey.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Gwen and I worked as peers in the U of M Libraries system until our respective retirements. I even went on a month long vacation to Hawaii with Gwen and Walter and another friend of mine. What a fun time! We wore glittery gold ball caps and rented a VW convertible which we made Walter drive. I have a wonderful picture of us that I would like to share. We had many laughs together at Gwen’s Welsh expressions. - Posted by: Pamela Whitehead (Colleague and friend) on: Jun 12, 2024

  • I contacted Gwen Back in 2008 when I had been unable to reach her daughter, Sue in Plano,Texas. She was very kind to let me know that Sue was in the hospital and very ill. I asked if she could give my contact information to Glynis. Gwen contacted me to inform me that Sue had passed away. I would greatly appreciate it if my contact information can be passed on to Glynis, Jennifer or Melissa. Thank-you. - Posted by: Sandi Heim (Friends with her daughter, Sue, when she lived in Wpg, MB) on: Jun 09, 2024
