Peacefully, at the Calvary Place Personal Care Home, on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at the age of 90. Cherished brother of Ellen (McKinnon) McCurrach and Donald McKinnon and their families. The third child in a family of four, he was born in Virden to Beatrice and Malcolm McKinnon, a farming family, who left the farm in 1937 and took residence in Hamiota and then Wheatland. He was predeceased by his brother, Keith, in 1999.
After high school, he moved to Winnipeg where he was employed by the Manitoba Provincial Government, eventually finishing his career in the Lands and Titles Office, Winnipeg. His parents died while he was in his 20s, He never married but was greatly loved by his brothers, sister, sister-law,and his many nieces and nephews. Upon retirement, he volunteered for several years at the Harvest House where he drove its truck to collect volunteered goods from donors in the community.
He was a participant in amateur sports over a lifetime, participating in golf and curling, attending Goldeye baseball games regularly and umpiring organized softball games for all ages. Reading was a hobby, especially books with a western setting, which he would procure from the local library. Gifted with a great sense of humour, he was always a welcome dinner companion as he related his unique view of his experiences of the day. A lover of animals, he kept a cat for many years, and he made sure that it was cared for when he entered the retirement home.
His sister, Ellen, was the family contact with the Bank of Montreal, who administered his estate, and the principal contact with the retirement residence, all conducted with extreme kindness and proficiency. Special thanks are also due to his neighbours, friends, Harvest House and Calvary Place for their friendship and kindness to Maurice over the years. In his last few years at Calvary House, he was treated to afternoon outings by Angela and Anna to visit his old settings and to enjoy a bowl of chili, his favourite lunch, at Tim Horton's. If God needs another helping hand in the hereafter, Maurice will surely volunteer.
An interment service is planned for later in the summer in Brandon where he will be interred with his parents.
