HAZEL MURIEL JOHNSTON
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Hazel. We were so proud to have been raised or related to her. Hazel carried herself with dignity and class, she was always a Lady.
Hazel was predeceased by her husband and life partner J. Frank, her parents, Robina and Ray Springett, sister Frances (Porter), and brothers, Ronald, Rodney and Royston.
Mom will be missed so much by her children, Robyn Johnston, Scott (Karen) Johnston and Donna (Eugene) Matlashewski.
She will also be missed by her grandchildren, Jay (Erin) Kilgour, Colin (Robin) Kilgour, Reid (Breanne) Kilgour, Cam (Krista) Kilgour, Steven (Sara) Johnston, Brett (Mike) Johnston, Bryce (Laura) Matlashewski, Mackenzie Matlashewski, Teghan (Brendan) Matlashewski. Hazel had 10 great-grandchildren and a wealth of extended family and many friends.
Hazel was a proud Fort Rouger. She had many fond memories living there with her family. She enjoyed her community and reminiscing about the times with neighbourhood kids. She attended Kelvin High School and was quick to indicate the long walk was good exercise.
Hazel and J. Frank met at the food wholesaler where Mom worked, and Dad called on. They were married in Winnipeg and headed for Regina where Dad was transferred. Mom was an excellent administrator and landed a job with the Saskatchewan Government.
Mom and Dad returned home to Winnipeg where Dad ultimately started a business with Mom right by his side. Mom excelled at keeping things in order and dealing with multiple suppliers.
As they progressed in business Mom was instrumental in the success they achieved. Dad always referred to her as “The President”.
They entered the wine business and Mom primarily dealt with the MLCC, Mom loved it and developed many friendships – they could say no to Dad, but not to Mom!
Mom and Dad partnered in everything. Hazel was a strength for Dad when he entered the Political arena. She worked side by side with him. She was a key adviser and confidante. Dad would always say Hazel garnered more votes than him! Hazel followed politics till the day she died, she never missed Manitoba Question period during the legislative sessions. Mom was honoured to receive the Queens Platinum Jubilee medal for her support of her community.
Hazel’s biggest joy in life was with family. Sunday night dinners, celebrating holidays together, the unique times we spent together on the campaign trail, and many outings. Attached at Mom’s hip was our family dog Jay – Jay the poodle, who Mom grew to love very much.
Mom always supported her children and grandchildren. Mom and Dad tried to attend all events and activities we were involved in. Mom always encouraged us to “get in there” and participate. She also demanded we stand up for ourselves.
Hazel loved the beach/lake. Mom took us to the Springett family cottage at Grand Beach every summer in the early years. Mom and Dad then bought an older cabin at Clear Lake and completely renovated it. Our family has had many memorable times there.
Mom and Dad enjoyed each others company. They regularly had dinner and socialized at their St. Charles Country Club. Mom enjoyed the many family celebrations we had there, particularly the Christmas family brunch as well as dancing the night away with Dad on New Years Eve.
Mom enjoyed life and would be the first to indicate she had no regrets. Hazel passed away on her own terms, family with her to the end. She lived independently right up until passing.
We take great peace of mind knowing that Mom has now joined Dad in heaven.
Our family would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses, and support staff at Grace Hospital for the excellent and compassionate care Mom received.
Hazel felt that at this point in her life a family gathering would be most fitting as a celebration of life. We will adhere to those wishes.
Our family wishes to extend our appreciation for the outpouring of kind words and condolences we have received thus far. It is humbling for us know Hazel was so well thought of by all.
Condolences can be received online by Chapel Lawn, Portage Avenue West.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation, recognizing Hazel Johnston.

One of the most elegant ladies you could ever meet. She was always dressed fabulously as was her husband and the two of them were looked on as setting an example to everyone. She leaves behind in her shadow a life well lived and will be sadly missed by her dear family who she loved and who loved her too. Condolences from the Milne family to Scott, Karen, their immediate family and the rest of the Johnston Family. - Posted by: Norm Milne (Friend) on: Jun 30, 2024

Scott, Karen, Robyn and the Johnson family. We are so very sorry for the passing of Hazel, your iconic and beloved mother and grandmother. We enjoyed every moment we ran into her while out and about, and in her yard when passing by. Always sharp as a whip and so full of life. The best dressed woman in St James! We will miss her.
