MANUEL (SONNY) I.

CORDOVA JR.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Manuel “Sonny” I. Cordova Jr. on Saturday June 15, 2024, at Riverview Health Centre at the age of 77 years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Manuel Vidal Cordova, Sr., and Fe Inzon Cordova; and his sisters, Ma. Aurora C. Orticio (Fred) and Josefina Cordova. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Evangeline; his son, Vince (Maricris); his daughters, Jacqueline (boyfriend Seong Min), and Katherine (Simon); granddaughter, Alyssa; his sisters, Ma. Elena C. Alvarado (Wilfredo – deceased) and Ma. Theresa C. Ignacio (Alfredo); brother, Nereo I. Cordova; and many of his cousins, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces.

Manuel was born in Putiao, Pilar, Sorsogon, Philippines on October 15, 1946. He attended the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in April 1969. In 1975, he immigrated to Canada and decided to settle permanently in Winnipeg. In 1978, he married Evangeline in the Philippines; after which, they flew back to Winnipeg to start a family. Manuel completed the structural/architectural drafting program at Red River Community College and graduated with honours in June 1994. He worked at Motor Coach Industries (MCI) as a designer for 24 years until his retirement.

Manuel enjoyed traveling, watching golf, reading, playing the piano and bass guitar. He was an active parishioner at St. Emile Catholic Church and participated in fundraising events. But a diagnosis of ALS in May 2020 forced him to slow down on his activities.

Lamay will be held on Friday June 28 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home (455 Lagimodiere Blvd.) from 7:00 to 11:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday June 29 at St. Emile Catholic Church (556 St. Anne’s Rd) at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at Glen Lawn Cemetery.

The Cordova family wishes to extend their appreciation to the following: Suzette Vinci-Irwin, case coordinator; Alanna Whitley and Penny Mitchell from the Respiratory Unit of Health Sciences Centre; Diana Rasmussen and Angela Hallam of the ALS society; Gemma, Ted, and the rest of the staff of 2 East at Riverview Health Centre; Eva San Gabriel of St. Gabriel Health Agency; and Tess McCallum.

  • Sonny was a gentle soul, very kind and engaging. I knew him as a loving husband, father and grandfather and son-in-law. A devoted Christian. We had the pleasure of his company on many occasions from his wedding day to my cousin Vangie, through the years, including his trip to the U.K. to make a final visit to my Mom. We had many FaceTime calls too. He was a very brave warrior facing a horrible ailment but never wavered in his love for his family and God. He will surely be missed and I send the deepest sympathies of my family to dear Vangie, Vince, Jackie and Catherine. With much love, Ditas and Duncan - Posted by: Ditas Pring (Cousin of wife Evangeline ) on: Jun 23, 2024
