It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Oladele Badejo. A dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Dad went home to be with the Lord on June 14, 2024. He will be deeply missed.
Dad was born on October 10, 1947 and raised in Ogun State, Nigeria. After obtaining his degree and working as an engineer in Lagos, he moved across the world in his 20s to support his family and wife at home - first to Germany and then to Canada. He eventually settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1974 with his faith, a strong sense of self and $20.00 in his pocket. His wife Taiwo (née Adebajo) joined him in Winnipeg after emigrating from Nigeria in 1975.
Married for over 50 years and together for more, they nurtured an affectionate family and built a vibrant legacy. Dad is survived by his loving soulmate Taiwo and their adoring children, Olu (Kelli and grandchildren), Esther (Brock and grandchildren, Marcus and Joshua), Florence, Grace, Elizabeth, Michael, and Michelle (Kavon), as well as numerous siblings, cousins, nephews and nieces in Canada and Nigeria.
Dad had the ability to light up a room. Whether it was his bright smile or boisterous laugh he was fast friends with everyone he met. Though he may have been soft-spoken or seemed reserved upon first meeting him, he would eventually open up with calming wisdom or a friendly joke. Dad also had a knack for home repair and would come up with creative "solutions" that always seemed to do the trick.
He was a huge fan of 80s and 90s-era wrestling, soccer (especially when Nigeria was playing in the World Cup), NHL hockey, and his home team, the Winnipeg Jets. He made sure to catch every game he could in person, on TV, or even on the radio.
However, Dad’s love for his family and friends was unmatched. He also treated everyone he met with kindness, love, and respect. Dad emphasized this when raising his children, and imparted a strong work ethic, moral fiber, a sense of humour and steadfast perseverance in all of them.
Dad’s faith in Jesus was the cornerstone of the life he led here. He ensured that all of his children knew that life’s lessons and experiences were articulated through the lens of a loving God. He was always in regular attendance with his wife at Calvary Temple where he taught as a Sunday School teacher for a number of years.
We were blessed by the precious memories made and unforgettable times God gave us through our Dad. We take comfort in knowing we’ll eventually be together again. All our love, Dad.
