Ilse Wakin Matusow, born December 5, 1934, peacefully passed away at age 89 on May 27, 2024. She was the daughter of Emma and Alexander Wakin. She was one of three children, older brother Eniko and younger brother Arthur.
In the year of our Lord, 1950, Emma and her children immigrated from Austria to Canada and made their home in Winnipeg. The Wakin family became members of the first St. Peter's German Lutheran church in Wolseley.
In 1951, Ilse was confirmed by Pastor Lenz of St. Peter's church. She attended evening classes, majored in English, and spoke several languages, which included Russian, German, and English. She worked for Famous Players Theatre and modeled for Paul Schiffer Portrait Studio. Ilse took an interest in all work and activities and made many good friends. In 1956, Ilse married Ernie Matusow, they took their wedding vows at St. Peter's church in the presence of God, Pastor Luther Sehabe, family, and friends.
Ilse and Ernie had three children, Diane Belinda, David Troy, and Karen Kristine. Ilse and Ernie moved from Jubilee Avenue in Fort Rouge to Fort Richmond. They became members of the Lutheran Church in Fort Richmond, later named Epiphany Lutheran Church.
Ilse took great interest in church activities, and volunteer work, she was a member of the altar guild and known as the candle maker of Epiphany church. Of all things dearest to her heart was writing poetry on themes of her childhood. In 1998 was presented with 'The Editor's Choice Award for outstanding achievement in poetry. She loved and adored her family. She enjoyed many beautiful Summers at her beloved Whiteshell Lake. She had a great respect for nature and the people she loved. Memorial and celebration will take place at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 200 Dalhousie Drive, July 6, 1:00 p.m.
