THEODOR (TED) KREIS

June 23, 1935 - June 26, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Theodor Kreis on June 26 at Concordia Hospital.

He leaves behind his three children, Harold (Sylvi), Robert (Lynda), and Richard. He also leaves behind grandchildren, Victoria (Youri), Christopher (Alessia), Jonathan (Laura), Darius (Jackie), Megan, Jordan, and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as Harley his only grandcat.

Ted was predeceased by his wife Clara of 63 years in 2022, his parents, Theodor and Emma, and his brothers, Willi and Robert.

Ted was born in Odessa, in a district called Rosenfeld, just a few years prior to the Second World War. The family moved numerous times, trying to stay away from the war front leaving most everything behind that they could not carry with them.

His family came to Manitoba in 1952, all except for his brother Robert, who was trapped behind the iron curtain in East Berlin. A year later, they moved to Winnipeg, where Ted found work at Western Grocers. He spent 37 years at Westfair Foods starting with driving trucks, working in the warehouse, and eventually transferring to Calgary, and finishing his career slotting warehouses in Western Canada. Ted retired early in 1993 to look after his ailing in-laws and moved back to Winnipeg.

During his work-life in Winnipeg, Ted helped his brother Willi build custom homes, and they built cottages for themselves in Spruce Sands, which was a favourite place to the family to go in the summer.

In their retirement, Ted and Clara began to enjoy life away from the demands of work and visited different towns in Manitoba. They particularly enjoyed picking mushrooms in the Whiteshell.

Ted was always interested in history and politics. He had a great sense of humour and in his words he “wasn’t always right, but very seldom wrong” and “don’t forget” he loved to make his own wine! Everything Ted did, he did for his family and was always concerned for others, supporting many causes and helping those in need.

We would like to thank his home care attendants, the staff at the Portsmouth, and his friends at Carpathia, for the care and love they gave Ted.

A Celebration of Life will be held on July 19, 2024, for close friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to support Ukraine refugees or the homeless.
