ALICE ORE

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our aunt, Alice (Oi Kum) Ore on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the age of 73.

Aunt Alice will be lovingly remembered by her sister Eliza Oi Chu Chan (predeceased brother-in-law Chun Fong Chan), and her nephews, Karl Chan (Kelsey), Allen Or, and nieces Kanning Burns (Phil), Lena Or (Frank), Kally Hodgson (Andrew), grand-nephews, Carson, Trevor, and grand-nieces, Cassandra, Lauren, Taylor, Caitlyn, Jade, Megan, Hayley, Avery and Sophie. She will also be sadly missed by many relatives and lifelong friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Boon Foo Ore and Kam Hong Se, her brothers, Yuen Chung Or (Ngy Hong Hong), Heung Wing Or (Yu Lun) and niece Lily Yip (Winston).

Alice was born in Shanghai, China on October 13, 1950. She moved to Winnipeg with her father in 1973. She found work full time as a seamstress, and on the weekends as a server at Marigold Restaurant. In 1980 her sister Eliza Oi Chu and brother-in-law Chun Fong opened Miriwa Restaurant where she worked for 25 years until her retirement in 2005.

Alice was always ready and willing to lend a hand. She cared for her father, as well as her many nieces and nephews as they were growing up. She was a great cook and loved to learn new recipes and try new food. Monday night dinners at her house was a ritual since that was her one day off. She would invite everyone to her house for delicious homemade Shanghai dishes like dumplings, noodles, soups and of course her famous Potstickers.

During her retirement, Alice also enjoyed travelling with her family and friends. She has been all over the world and visited many different countries. She also enjoyed going for long walks, especially at St. Vital Mall, where she was recognized by all the customers that she met at Miriwa.

She will be sadly missed, but will be remembered for her generosity, kindness and caring personality.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 13, 2024, 10:00 a.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg, MB. Interment will follow at Transcona Cemetery.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I didn’t know Alice personally, but have been a long time patron of the Miriwa restaurant where I saw her on numerous occasions. I very much appreciated her attention to providing quality food and service to her customers for so many years, something that is unfortunately not the norm these days. Rest easy miss Alice and thank you for your work at Marie’s. - Posted by: Earl Toews (Patron of Miriwa restaurant ) on: Jul 06, 2024
