JANETTE YVONNE PAYNE

Retaining a heart full of love and smile that could light up the darkest room, our beloved matriarch bid us farewell in the early morning of Friday, July 12, 2024. Departing at 01:08 CDT, after a battle with cancer, enveloped by the warmth of her family and the memories of a life well-lived.

She leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and the kind of wisdom that only a mother can impart. Her devoted husband Ron, three boys, Paul (Diana), Josh (Allison) granddaughter Teagan (Ben), and Brett (Maurisa), will carry her spirit forward. Jan is survived by older brother Jim (Rose) Brian and sister Judy, their respective dearly loved children, Tom (Cindy), Teresa (Curtis), Rich (Tracy) and Sue (Lance) and Mark (Kendra), great nieces/nephews, and a growing set of grand-great nieces/nephews.

A friend of mother earth and creatures great and small, she shared her home and heart with friends, family, and a parade of four-legged companions. Connie, the graceful greyhound, and Casey, the loyal Weimaraner, enjoyed regular walks and treats. Jazz, the loveably, awkward German Shepherd/Basset Hound cross, and Bristol, the Terrier-Mutt with a bark bigger than her bite, all shared mutual adoration between her and them.

Ma was a trailblazer, ‘squiggle’, doing things her way. She was a feminist and demonstrated strong feminine values fervently amongst her boys. A competitive swimmer (Manta Swim Club), a bridge player (with the ‘Bridge Girls’), a ball room dancer (Gimli and Winnipeg dance groups), a potter (Gimli Art Club) a leading corporate citizen and elite salesperson with AMEX (Metro Business Club of Winnipeg). Jan was involved in many charitable activities most notably as co-chair of Winnipeg’s Share Our Strength, Taste of the Nation, securing key corporate sponsorships during her time on the charity’s board. She had an ability to make anyone feel heard, special and the most important person in that moment. She loved the lake, inviting friends and family to ‘zen’ with her.

Her smile and laughter were infectious, her advice was priceless, given when asked, and her ability to find joy in the simplest things was a lesson to us all. She was the glue that held us together, the compass that guided us, and the light that will continue to shine in our hearts.

As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that she is catching up with passed loved ones, playing fetch with her furry friends, organizing the furniture, all while keeping an eye on us from above. Rip, tear, pull hair.

Rest in peace, Ma. You may have left this world, but you'll never leave our hearts.

A Celebration of Life will be held to commemorate Jan, Saturday, July 27 at 14h00 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R2J 4J4.

Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • My sincere condolences to Ron and family on the tragic loss of Jan. I hadn’t seen her often since high school but the times that we did meet the expression “able to light up a room with her smile” was certainly evident. Kind regards, Ted - Posted by: Ted Falloon (Friend) on: Aug 24, 2024

  • My deepest condolences to Ron and the boys. Jan and I met when we were neighbours in Charleswood many years ago. Being two stay at home moms we got to know each other very quickly. She was kind, fun loving, very adventurous and loved her family deeply. She will leave a hole in the many hearts that she touched. - Posted by: Val Saurette (Friend and old neighbour ) on: Aug 02, 2024

  • Like so many others, I first met Jan through the Metro Club where we spent a number of years together both as members and sitting on the board together. Jan was key and instrumental on paving the way to my employment with AMEX where I spent over 5 years. We shared some fun times as working colleagues and going on business trips together. She was a great mentor to have during my time with AMEX. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family on your loss. Jan will be dearly missed. - Posted by: John Creelman (Friend ) on: Jul 30, 2024

  • Jan brightened up any room she stepped into. Her cheerful, friendly and sincere manner, and her common sense won her the hearts and minds of many. She was always a willing sounding board, gave good advice, and was a good friend to many. It is hard to imagine a world without Jan in it, but she will be kept near and dear in my heart forever. Thanks, Jan, for being such a wonderful pal. Gin - Posted by: Ginny Brown (Friend ) on: Jul 21, 2024

  • A perfect tribute to a wonderful woman from her family! I will miss Jan's warmth and wit, as I'm sure all of her Palmer Place friends will. • Jan was a genuine lovely lady. We curled together at Winnipeg Beach CC, played Bridge in Sandy Hook and golfed together at Sandy Hook GC (she was my fellow lefty). Her artistic talents were above and beyond. She will be missed by her family and many friends. Rest in Peace Jan. • I met Jan and her husband, Ron, when they came into a Ballroom dance class I was teaching years ago; must be over a decade...maybe close to two. They were with me right up until the last session I taught in late 2023 before retiring. Jan was a small but mighty force and a quick study as was Ron. She was my "go to" demo partner in recent years. I will miss you, Jan. My heart goes out to you, Ron (my other "go to" partner), as well as the rest of the family. - Posted by: Kathryn McGuire (friend and teacher) on: Jul 20, 2024
